Drove over the hard knotted pass in the lake district ? Its frickening, in parts its less then 8 feet wide with no walls to stop you dropping off, it has lots of hairpin bends that are so steep you need to be in first gear to get round and if you meet another car going in the opposite direction, You are in deep mire, There is no room to turn round so once committed, Its a do or die situation and its completely free ,

Tom….
I think you must mean Hardknott pass. Been over it several times but not driven myself, mainly in the sixties and seventies. Don’t remember it being scary. Perhaps because I was much younger then.

We have only driven over it on one occasion and that was enough.

If you want to see the beauty of Eskdale, travel on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Narrow Guge Railway which is safer!

I've done all the passes, some more than once. One time, I went over Hardknott in a Mercedes van, going toward Ravenglass. Going wasn't so bad, except I ended up only having three wheels touching the road, where it goes down that very steep hill, which is also on the sharp bend.
Coming back, I got stuck on the bad bend because only one of the back wheels was touching the road surface, and that was polished smooth by spinning wheels.
My mate had to get out and back me down the hill until I got to a spot where I could turn around,

I've been over it a couple of times on a motorbike. Never in a car. You want to try it in the snow, Tom!

I think? I have been over it once When we went fishing in Ullswater My brother in law was driving I told him to stop the car and I would walk it down the hill.
The only other time I've been terrified driving over a narrow road with a drop at the side was in Cyprus. Again with my brother and sister in law and my wife I was driving a ramshackle Hire car We had driven to the middle of the island via a motorway. and decided instead of driving around the coast road motor way, to get back to Pathos we would take the mountain road which was a lot shorter.. It was OK for a few miles However once we started to climb the road became just a dirt track with a deep drop at one side i.e. the right hand side My wife and sister in,law were laughing at me driving on the left in order to keep away from the drop No barriers..Once we got or less at the top they werent laughing then.. At the bottom of the "drop" were just pine trees I kept thinking "If we go over here they will never find us" Not that it would have mattered as we would be dead. My brother in law said he would drive. But I didn't know what would be worse, someone else driving. Where I had no control, So I just carried on.Ive never been as relieved in my life when we got on lever ground again with a proper road.. When we got back to Pathos I returned the car to the hire company The guy sad "You have car for another 3 days" I said NO THANKS I've had enough..

The old section of road above what is now a new section the of the road in and out the fishing port of Mallaig in Scotland is terrifying as my Wife and I found out when the driver of the Shearing's coach we were on decided for some stupid reason to go along it instead of just going by the new road on which we had entered the fishing port.

We were sat on the right hand side of the coach and when I looked down we were on the edge of a big drop onto the new road.

My Wife and I along with the othe passengers were terrified and could not understand why the driver dicided to do it!
