Message For JR...

Tony Meadows (aka Custer), has passed away after a long illness.

Tony was a legend in Pemberton and a character everyone loved. He founded The Fantastic Film Society and was an avid fan, critic, writer, and musician. He was also active in martial arts in his younger days.

Tony lived in Pemberton all his life and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Knew custer from years ago. Had many a chat with him about horror films when I knocked about with Dave Bithell.

This is very, very sad, especially as I hadn't seen Custer again for perhaps 3 years or so. Have any info on funeral arrangements?

Jarvo, I contacted Brian Talbot (now a world wide famous graphic artist to let him know of the sad death of Custer. Apparently he already knew from Chester (I'd forgotten about Chester but it appears the 2 still keep in touch).

How old was he? Where did he live?Reading the name CUSTER brought back a memory from back in the 50's 60' of someone called 'CUSTARD'. Has anyone heard this name before? I think I may be entirely on the wrong tack? Or maybe I miss heard the name CUSTER?

Peter, yes I remember CUSTARD She hasn't posted for years. That's probably where I heard that nickname.

JR: Tony's funeral is at Wigan Crem on Thursday, November 7th at 3PM, and afterwards at The Swinley Club.

Jarvo. I will be attending the funeral with my wife. I am assuming that the dress code might be casual? I guess this due to Custer's lifestyle and many hippy mates. However, if you know different could you advise please as I'm happy to wear a black suit.

Custer's funeral was well orchestrated and a wonderful tribute to him. A handful of old hippies appeared on the day. My wife and I were very good friends with Custer. The event was very sad but put guests in good spirits.
I've let many old friends know and have had favourable responses.
What a character he was!!!

JR: My wife and I sat at the back. I found the playing of Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' very moving. They played a Zappa tune and then we left the Crem.

We could not attend the wake due to a prior engagement.

It was good send off for a very interesting and entertaining guy. We grew up on the same estate. I will never forget him.

Jarvo. My wife and I were stuck in traffic and missed the 1st minute. We were quickly ushered to the front row at the left. We didn't attend the wake but stayed a while to chat to old friends. Jane was pleased to see us and thanked us. Custer's cousin Colin was there. It must be 45 years since I last saw him! When the narrative spoke of Tony's first projector, I actually bought that from him... a standard 8mm Brownie which I still have!

JR: I spoke to Jane at a Pemberton reunion in summer and she informed me then about his poor health. I didn't realise how serious it was.

He was a one-off and will be missed by all who knew him.
