Can anyone tell me if there on display a small operative train and tracks? It was hand built by (Horace?) Dean (married to Nellie) who live at 60 Billingsgate; Please let me know if you can. Thank you.

I remember going with my parents to see my "Uncle Stan" in or around the Pemberton/Orrell area. I called him that out of respect as he was a friend of dad's, but no relation.
I remember he had large units around three walls, at the top, near the ceiling in his living room where he'd mounted a working model of a steam engine and carriages, which he'd made himself, in glass cases. It's hard for me to gauge their size but they were substantial from a child's point of view. They fascinated me every time I went there.

In the news yesterday about the council are going to spend £350000 to restore the miniature railway in Haigh Hall grounds

Why allow the miniature railway run down to a extent that £350,000 is to be spent restoring it to its former condition?

I expect the £20 million the council got from the Government levelling up fund, to restore Haigh Hall will help.

Whacker, sorry I don’t know the answer to your question, but perhaps someone at the Wigan & District Model Engineering Society (Link) can help:

Thank you, Jo Anne. That was very courteous of you. I shall email the Society. Horace - his first name changes here and there - Dean, was my uncle by marriage and I well remember him working on his train at an upstairs lathe in his house. Perhaps he was working out his frustration. My mother (and I have this also from other sources) told me that his wife. and my direct aunt, Nellie, was romantically engaged with their lodger. Whom I also remember.

Would have liked to have gone to this, unfortunately I'm away. Enjoy if you do go.
