The price of a pint - and postage stamp
It doesn’t seem that long ago there was uproar if the price went up a couple of pence. A pint now costs £4.94.
Same with stamps
New rise makes it £1.65 for first class.

I-spy that makes ale at £39-52 a gallon and petrol is £6-34 a gallon on average unless you use motorway services then petrol is £7-61 a gallon(£1-67 a litre)

from another view, to send a letter anywhere in the uk for £1.65, is a good deal, Even sending a small parcel is not bad at under a fiver when you think, of the price of fuel, As for beer, that is not essential and you can brew your own and it can be done for 50p a pint,
life's not so gloomy after all until Winter kicks in and then.. Us pensioners will feel the full brunt of this savage labour party,,,Give us our winter fuel back you knighted piece of dog Poo

I meet my bro's every month and we have a few round Wigan, We generally get rounds in and £20 a round is about average, most times someone cops for 2 rounds but we don't bitch about it, We are all fair and if anyone is holding back, some one will say " hey thee with short arms and deep pockets, its thy shout "

Tom typed
"Give us our winter fuel back you knighted piece of dog Poo "
£20 a round once a month That's £240 per year. Yet Tom want his winter fuel allowance given back? A lot of pensioners look at their income and prioritise. I don't suppose a lot could opt for a night on the tiles even once a month. If you feel short changed Tom apply for Pension Credit

Some weeks ago I paid, in the Boar's Head, nearly £14 for two and a half pints. By the way, one of the guys with me only wanted a half.

Since 1990 the number of letters posted in the UK, excluding election correspondence, has fallen by more than a half.
No doubt the overheads haven’t followed suit, hence the Royal Mail wanting to stop Saturday deliveries either in full or except for first class letters.

Gaffer.
Since E-Mail was introduced , it was the beginning of the end for the hand written letter. Sadly, a lot of children / teenagers these days have never even written a letter.
Now E-Mail is going out of fashion and text messages have taken over the top spot.
Is it any wonder why a lot of young ones these days can't spell, can't handwrite, or can't even read anything apart from text language?
Technology can be a good thing, but, in the basic education of the English language, its a scourge

I echo what Cheshire Cat has said regarding youngsters having problems with basic English, and it's appalling and the internet is at fault for this. They're too wrapped up in playing video games or other activities rather than learning their own language. Not everyone is skilled in the art of reading and writing as long as they can communicate at some level of understanding. My level of English is good, but I always came bottom of the class in maths because my brain doesn't work in that direction, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Stamps, yes, I think £1.65 per stamp is extortionate but, again, how many people send letters these days when there are cheaper options like texting, emailing and social media where people can make contact? I only buy stamps these days to send birthday or Christmas cards, so I’m assuming the Post Office has to continue to pay Posties, vehicles, cost of sorting office staff etc.

Molliem.
Regarding Royal Mail. You can buy a second class stamp for £0.85p and a first class stamp for £ 1.35.
That is the online price.
Whether or not they are more expensive in a post office, I have no idea?

Tonker, shurrup you!
Cheshire Cat, I rarely buy stamps at all as I can't get to a Post Office these days, so I tend to buy a book of six from my local shop, but I don't know how much I pay. On the odd occasion I've bought one from my boss at work, and I think the last one was for £1.25.

I'd say your boss was a tight git Mollie , surly the office has a , franking system or arrangement for postage or even just, " hey Mollie have it on me kid " fer christs sake £1.65 is a wizz in the ocean
Replied: 8th Sep 2024 at 23:20
No Tom, franking machines are outdated and we've never used one, and no special arrangements for posting.
I've been offered one for nothing, but I've always insisted on paying. Believe me Tom. My boss is anything but tight as he's helped me out personally in the past for which I am forever grateful, and I never take anything, or anybody, for granted.

Those prices for beer are crazy. I don’t know the statistics, so I’m just guessing, but I imagine many folk will be staying at home these days and buying their beer/lager more cheaply from supermarkets where the price is a lot less, or making their own, making the breweries up their costs. I haven’t had a drink in a pub or club for 16 years so I’d no idea costs had gone up so much. I wonder how folk manage it on a regular basis. More to the point, how can people afford to get drunk at those prices? My brother makes his own beer and wine, and his beer would fuel the next manned spacecraft to Mars!

For a good while If I got the chance to go out to socialize I was drinking zero alcohol lager at £3-60 for 2 x330Ml bottles, A pint of Bitter was £2-95. If I drink at home a 660Ml bottle of Lager costs between £2 and £2-65 and 4 cans of Bitter £4 to £4-50. A nice refreshing drink is a bottle of zero alcohol pear cider with ice at £1-50 for 500Ml bottle. I visited the Blist Living Museum near Ironbridge on Sat and had half of bitter at £2-60 .

How often do some of you go out or visit anywhere as the higher prices being quoted have been the norm for ages at holiday resorts, tourist attractions, the dearer restaurants and especially at sports stadiums, race tracks, music concerts and especially at any place where they have got you inside they know that if you want a drink or indeed some food you either pay it or go without it.
Thanks to Tim Martin, there are now cheaper altetnatives of food and drink at his many Weatherspoons pubs scattered around the country!

Peter: Anybody willing to pay extortionate prices at the Christmas Markets are either very wealthy, stupid, or they're living off credit cards. I may be a lot of things, but gullible isn't one of them.
