TV programme 'EARTH' with Chris Packham

Started by: admin (1839)

The best thing on TV... should be shown in every senior school in the U.K. How can people not be interested in 'How it all Began' and how the earth has evolved. A few years ago I went to a talk about the Appley Bridge Meteorite. The guy giving the talk had fragments of a meteorite. He said it was 4 1/2 Billion years old.... What a thrill it was to hold it..The oldest thing on earth..

"The oldest thing on earth.."?

Errrrr., how can that be?
Apart from 'age' being relative and time being man-made, there's one thing, at least, which is mined and is as old as the Universe it'self.
Lithium.
I say that because they say so and I believe them. Who says so? Them men! Do you believe them men?
It's all a state of mind.

PS: how did the Appley Bridge Meteorite man know the age of the meteorite? Because they said so?

Tonker, watch the programmes, everything is explained. I would rather accept the explanation of a Scientist(Not that Chris Packham is a scientist but he is only the 'Mouth Piece of the programme.) than "A man at the pub says"

Well, I look at it this way ..........

Lithium comes from the creatrion of The Universe ..... Because THEY say so. Scientists? Chemists? Welders? Bricklayers? Chartyered Accountants?
They only say so because they have been told so.
They've been told so by a person who thinks so.
No definate reason. No calculations exist. Only 'logical reasoning'.
Their 'logical reasoning' says that The Universe is 13.7 billion years old.
Taking it that Lithium is 13.7 billion years old and it's mined from The Earth, it's (thought to be) older than the Appley Bridge meteorite (is thought to be).
A Postman knows just as much as anybody else about it, because it cannot be proved.

Re: 10 BC coin ......

The date, 10 BC didn't exist until the 6th century. It follows that a coin dated 10 BC could only have been made after the 6th century. Yes?

I think the evolution of the earth and its creatures is fascinating but, we can all be cynical like Tonker because there’s no actual proof as yet as to how old things are but, for now, we have to trust those that have studied and tested things from before man evolved.

The only accurate data is radiocarbon dating, known as Carbon 14, which can only be dated up to 60,000 years ago, a mere speck in time. Time itself? Yes, it is man-made, but it’s the only means we have of theorising as to the age of things which fit in with our human evolution and understanding, which is the length of a grain of sand in time itself so logically, we’ve no idea of the age of anything in real terms.

However, scientists of Paleontology study their craft in as far as can be determined in fossil evidence to discover how organisms (first life forms on earth) have changed due to the earth’s natural formation, changes in weather conditions (severe heat to ice age) etc and, don’t forget, plant life, fish, insects and then animals were here long before the beginning of man many millions of years ago when they started out as slimy sea creatures, and which eventually managed to crawl out of the quagmires of a primeval soup and joined the animal kingdom.

Lifeforms are known to exist quite happily as micro-organisms in the waters surrounding nuclear plants which could otherwise destroy most life on earth, so who’s to know how or why? They just are.

Anthropologists can only trace the first “men” back to 3½ million years ago from the Stone Age in Africa when there was the first trace of sentient life such as it was so, because of technology and study, it’s a fair bet that scientists of the Cosmos can determine life forms long before then, maybe not with 100% accuracy, but it’s all we have to go on for now. Before that our ancestors were primates and, if you doubt that, look at photos of a new born human baby, and one of a new born gorilla and you’ll see little or no difference. Even today, new species are being found in the sea and, who knows, one day one of them may too evolve and develop into yet another land “intelligent” life form, and I use the word “intelligent” loosely because humans haven’t yet learned enlightenment but, perhaps, one day will learn how to live together in peace and harmony, but that’s a long time in the future, provided the planet itself, and mankind, survive long enough!

just done some googling and, the first records of metals was in 8000 BC of copper beads, strangely enough, coins are made of copper but, not fully copper, full copper is too soft and you can prove this with a magnet, If you put a magnet on a copper coin, the magnet will be attracted to it, on full copper it wont so, here again we have tonkers theory of , HTF did they know ??

There is an old saying,

believe nothing you hear and, only half of what you see and, that rings true to me,

There weren't any known kings or queens from so long ago as they would have been elders or chiefs.

You could try using the current king's head on your coin though, but it wouldn't get you far for long.

Ok I think Chief sounds too much like America so, we'll go for elder and because Nuns played a big role in my early years, I'll use Eldernun with a picture of a penguin and a date stamp of 07555 BC with jagged corners like a ten bob piece and if it sells, I'll give the funds to a person in Wigan who recently lost his Winter fuel allowance,
