Skooo's break up this Friday

Started by: tomplum (14763)

So my camping trips will be avoiding the touristy spots and routes to get there so, I'm doing more local camping where families never think off and to be honest, when I had a young family, I would never think of taking them round the Wigan flashes or the Sankey valley, Since retirement I've learned that most areas have regions of nature and beauty so, thats where I'm headed to.
Other towns places of natural wealth that they've never seen,

any suggestions ??

How about the Trough of Bowland, Tom. Our parents used to take us there when we were kids and, from what I can remember, it's just wild and woolly with sheep.

That's a good suggestion Mollie, I'll make a note of that, I've just been on maps.google and there are a lot of coastal towns and villages that have coastal paths that I can cycle round and Cosby beach has a big nature reserve and near to Formby and ainsdale and the red squirrels run free there, I've never eaten a red squirrel so, that sounds interesting to me,
( just joking) before the wooden spoons get stirring,,,

From what I can remember, there's a lot of lovely wildlife there which would suit you down to the ground. You've probably had a look by now that it's an historic place, but there are some nice steep hills for you to challenge on your bike.

Mum had taken a picnic with us and while I was eating a butty a sheep came up to me so I offered it a piece. It ran off bleating its head off. Well! I didn't know I was eating a lamb butty. I was only about six.

Apparently there are castles nearby and, of course, Pendle where the so-called witches were, so probably a museum as well. All interesting stuff.

sometimes history is confusing, On my Penrith venture I asked a local man where Hadrian's wall was, he said ," at the bottom of Hadrian's garden "

I love Wensleydale. Nice villages and lovely waterfalls all the way from Sedburgh to Hawes and Aysgarth and beyond.

A lovely 45 mile ride is along the Witches trail which starts at the Pendle Heritage Centre at Barrowford and goes via Newton in Pendle where there is a Witches shop, Downham where they made the TV series Born and Bred and Dunsford Bridge which is the geographical centre of Great Britain, then via the Trough of Bowland to Lancaster Castle where the Pendle Witches were tried and hung in 1612.

A map of the route can be obtained on the internet.

tom plum

Have you ever done the bike ride from Liverpool Pierhead to Wigan Pier along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with a stop along the way for a bit of lunch at one of the nearby pubs?

I did along with others and had a great day out!

Today was a failure in my quest for finding a place to go with no kids but, A pleasant failure, Myself and Mrs Plum tried a seaside resort with no fair ground hoping for a peaceful day and visited the South beach of Fleetwood and although the kids were there and plenty of them but mostly accompanied by parents or grandparents, there are three seafront lakes/ponds there and crab fishing is popular in those lakes, They are well maintained and manicured with row boats and a model boat club there with free car parking and a small cafe, So a walk round the lakes and sea front leading to a beach area with a cycling path and walking areas, A very pleasant afternoon on a warm summers day,

Tom, I like Fleetwood as well. I used to go there once a month on Sunday to two clothes shops. Not sure which part you were in exactly, but there was a great cafe in the row of shops facing away from the sea, and there was also a retro toffee shop as well.

It wasn't a warm summer day today though. Not like yesterday.

I'm not one for clothes shops Mollie so I don't know that but, mrs Plum like the toffee shop in the indoor market and today she grabbed a bargain with low sell by date , walnut whips, they expire 8/24 so were on offer at a low price, But it was very warm in Fleetwood even with the sea breeze blowing in a kindly way, It started to rain as we were heading home and the car windows got shut,

That indoor market is on the same street where I bought my skirts and tops but, as it was a Sunday, the market was closed.

Ooh, walnut whips. You don't see those anymore, like a lot of other sweets.

That's typical. All choccy bars and bags of crisps are smaller, and cost twice as much.

I got a six pack of crisps which said 45% less salt. When I opened one I thought, "yeah, and 45% less content as well." What a scam.
