Actually Tom, it was a North American P-51D Mustang, with a with a Turbocharged Allison V-1710 V12 engine LINK similar to the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, but more advanced in terms of using a Turbocharger, instead of the Merlin's Supercharger.
It sounded good though and I thought it was Merlin engine'd Spitfire or Hurricane

No TTS. It was a Spitfire XIX, with a Griffon engine.

I'm not arguing with yoo Tommy Tee, I admit to only guessing by the sound

Tom
Well I thought it sounded like a Merlin, those powerful V12 engines make a beautiful deep throaty sound, and when the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew straight over me in Spring View one day, which was a Lancaster with a Hurricane and a Spitfire on it's wings, that was six Merlin engines flying over, and you could feel them in your chest

Does anyone remember the Woodvale show. I remember its origins as a model aircraft show which my husband and friends attended every year sometime in the late sixties early seventies.
It then grew into a combined classic car and air show, eventually dropping the RC models. We went every year until it cease to exist at that location
Great memories.

Just reading this message and beggar me a spitfire flew North up the coast past the tower (Blackpool that is), or was it a Mustang or a griffon engine with wings.?

Anne
Woodvale near Southport ?
I remember the Woodford Airshow, and during the 1985 airshow, I was living in Atherton and these low flying jets were buzzing me all afternoon, so Atherton must have been on some sort of flight path to Woodford, and I was outside when an RAF Jaguar floo over at about a 100ft and it scared the crap out of me

That Vulcan bomber is also a loud bugger, When I saw it at the Blackpool airshow they put it in a steep climb just in front of the crowd near to the seafront at central pier and WOW,,,another 'air on arms stood up' moment, The commentator gave a warning to hold your dog firmly if its with you because, it makes a thunderstorm sound like a whisper in comparison,,

Yes tts,
The RAF airbase.

Ok Anne
Tom
The Vulcan used the same engines has Concorde did, four Olympus Turbo Fan's with reheat, and Concorde was a noisy bugger.

Watched a programme where the Dutch as a thank you for what we did to help them in the second world war went to the expense of building a steel tank and then draining out the water around where a Lancaster bomber was shot down on its way home from a mission to find out what had happen to three members of it's seven man crew to find out what happen to their bodies as they were never recovered at the time of the crash.
Very interesting, but also very emotional!
