Rice Pudding

Did your Mam make a good rice pudding with a lovely brown skin on? I remember we all wanted skin with our pudding in our house, I've seen folk put jam in theirs and mix it up so it turned red. Didn't like Tapioca (frog spawn) or Semolina at all.

When we were first married my hubby was a fireman and I used to make him rice pud to take to work ..I seemed to be forever making rice puds..and yes he loved the skin...so did my Dad.

Nutmeg sprinkled on top made a really tasty skin

What about doing your toast in front of a coal fire, then sitting there while you ate it and your legs got that corned beef pattern on them.

Don’t mention corned beef. You will have Walshy salivating.

Skin on rice pudding, yuk.

Dad always used to call rice pudding, "Burma Road"!

Still like it with jam

Every time I try to make a rice pudding I follow the instructions but always end up with a runny pudding and next to no skin My mother used to make solid rice pudding with a thick skin. What am I doing wrong

When I was young, yes.

Food then rationed.

Getting sufficient was an issue. Plenty of food was bland, so appetising dish was a treat.

But now!

Wigan, I understand is the lardy capital of the UK. First thing I notice when I visit is how fat so many people are.

Do not think that I would really want to encourage Wiganers to eat rice, cream, sugar, concoction.

When I was a youngster, people used to cook good homemade food.

No Takeaways, except the fish and chip or pie shop and no microwave meals which have become the norm for too many today.

Owd Codger, sadly that is the very reason we have such an high obesity rate in this country which in turn puts even more stress on the NHS and not a good life expectancy for the afflicted.

Plus the majority of kids, today, are lazy.

ena: I vaguely remember food rationing, I do remember when rationing was taken off sweets! But I never knew sugar was rationed until one of my brothers told me when we were grown up that our mum gave us her ration and never told us. Most of it when on cereals, porridge, etc.
It was weird because I can never see mum drinking tea without sugar, but she did during rationing.

I was brought with rationing, relatives would give us their sweet coupons and everyone had to register at a butchers, I used to collect ours at the butchers and I was handed a parcel, no idea what was in it.

I was too young to appreciate rationing, I think being the youngest I was indulged. Looking back, I think there was a lot of sacrifices by parents and siblings alike. (And now we're told we're the better generation!)
But, Domin0, what reminds me is my brother worked for a butcher on Saturdays and holidays, he used to deliver orders in his basket on the bike and he was paid in meat, a joint/sausages, etc. My mother was delighted and we used to wait for my brother to come home on a Saturday night, we never knew what was coming!

Rice Pudding or a Custert’? For either, a key ingredient was Nutmeg!
