I think you will find that today, many of those who would go, know about military training, discipline and weapons and not be idealists like the author George Orwell and others were in the thirties.

There have been mercenaries as far back as military history stretches.

However, I suspect the men identifying themselves as an International Brigade, and setting off to fight for Ukraine would be quite offended to hear themselves classed as mercenaries.

One, who spoke on TV is part of Ukrainian diaspora, with former service in Ukrainian armed services.
