Again
Last year I had to call police due to ..it turned out to be ..a foreigner who was drunk..banging on my door for a full hour and a half , the police weren't in a rush neither, having just lost my hubby I felt so lonely and vulnerable..tonight an hour ago someone knocked on my door,I looked through the window to see a man walking up the garden path turning round to wave at me..and leaving the gate wide open..methinks I'm going to get a big dog...no sleep for me again tonight.

Hot food deliveries are all the rage at the moment, and they employ some reet Wallys to deliver the grub, they are forever going to the wrong addresses
Replied: 30th Oct 2021 at 00:19
He didn't look like any delivery man to me..I know it was dark, but his outline said he had a long coat on..plus looked through the bedroom window this A.M.and the gate that was left open was now closed?

momac is it possible you can buy a RING doorbell it may solve your problem
Replied: 30th Oct 2021 at 08:36
sorry to learn of this it is another trait of society today.
I too live alone and my son has installed camera door bell system which allows me to see and monitor who approaches and or rings and if need be I can sound an alarm siren.
Not sure on all the ins and outs but someone may be able to advise I don't think they are cheap and have an annual charge.
Good luck

NJ and Orrellite,I'm going to have to do something..I'm fed up of losing sleep over these idiots.
Replied: 30th Oct 2021 at 08:50
I think Orrellite's suggestion is a good one. My brother has one. Also make sure you have locks and chains on your doors for peace of mind. Maybe one of those lights attached the the wall that lights up the path when someone comes in. That could be enough to put off idiots approaching,

The RING doorbell doesn't have an annual charge unless you want to save everything then it's £24.99 I pay

this one is the one where you can unclip it off the video frame and charge it so there are no wires, a complete charge lasts about a month.

momac
I am not being flippant, or stupid, this is a serious question, but have you got a number on your property, because these days folk having numbers on their properties seems to have fallen out of fashion, and it can be really hard for delivery drivers, or who ever, bad uns even, but it sounds to me as though your address is being mistaken for someone else's address, it is just a suggestion, but even if you have a number on your house, put a bigger clearer number in its place, with some sort of illumination device, a security light which comes on if someone walks up your path, and of course the ring doorbell system.

Momac my charge lasts 2 weeks so I have a spare battery so my doorbell works all the time
Replied: 30th Oct 2021 at 11:23
I think it depends how sensitive its set at or if you live on a busy road
Replied: 30th Oct 2021 at 11:38
A camera system would be a good idea Momac or, even a 'dummy' camera, You can get a 'Dummy one quite cheap,
dummy camera

I have one, I gave a very critical review on Amazon, they contacted me and sent me a new one and the battery lasts 2 to 3 months.
And the warranty was well past its date.

CCTV is very good as you can generally tell by the visitors demeanour if they are genuine or not!
Also very good at spotting trick or treaters and turning the lights off!
Only joking

Replied: 2nd Nov 2021 at 12:01
I don't know the answer to that Bas but, there's a guy comes on here who claims to be an Electronics company owner and earns more in a day than i get all year, Perhaps he can ENLIGHTEN ( see what i did there) us all,
Replied: 2nd Nov 2021 at 12:18
Thank you Tom but..as Basil says I don't think we'll have enough sunlight to keep it charged..those solar fairy lights that you sorted for me round the front door didn't light up at all the other night because it had been dark all day.
My Son is calling shortly, between us having a natter as to which is the best way to go..will let you know the outcome.????

My Sons just sent for a sensor light..we've had one in the back garden for years ..it's coming tomorrow, it should put the idiots off..but thank you to everyone.xxx

My brother (a qualified electrician) put an ornamental sensor light at the side of my front door a couple of years ago, which is very useful once it's gone dark.
However, after a bit of a scare a few years ago, I made it a rule of thumb that never to answer my door to anyone after dark, unless I know someone I know will be coming at a certain time. Friends of mine up the road know to knock on my window before I answer the door to them but, if it's someone I don't know, I open the front window to ask what they want.
I too live alone and am an older lady, and you just never know who's on the other side of the door, especially at night.
Replied: 6th Nov 2021 at 21:18
Yes Molly,it isn't very nice when you're on your own is it..I sent for and got a sensor light but have to wait until my Son gets time to put it up..he's in care work so works very long hours..can't wait.

At one time long, long ago when there were only non digital land lines available criminals would ring to see, if when it was known a lone person lived alone was in or out before knocking. At least it will show on today’s phones who is ringing. It is mostly nuisance calls. Nevertheless I find it best to put a stout padlock on my front gate along with several movement activated lights about, next step I am thinking about is cameras, neighbours have them.

Every morning I look at my Ring doorbell activity & if I see anything worth another look I note the time then look at CCTV camera saves trawling through if you know the time of activity
