See the building in the background, white first floor. Am sure I read on here that was a pub at one stage.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 15:34
Trying to make out if that pic was before or after they put an exclusive lane at thet point for Fire engines.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 15:35
Was it not the seven stars, or was that further up near the bridge. I do remember there being a pub there though.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 15:36
I haven't a clue what the road system was like then.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 15:36
Seven stars is after the bridge, EQ. In fact, you can just see it's roof on the pic

There's a terracotta feature on the front of a bird in a hand.

I'm now almost doubting that pub name.
I cant remember what the name of the company who sold fancy goods etc in there was called.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 16:19
If memory serves me right the pub was used as a shop that sold cheap furniture and houshold goods, that would be in mid 80s.
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 16:20
Didn't Millers use to be up Whelley at one time.

I can't remember it, KD... I remember Millers, but not the road layout around it. I even walked past there a few times
Nearest I can get is remembering when the road running past the fire station changed.
Although I think the building in the background on the left was a woodyard?...And there was a sail making place near there?
Replied: 19th Jan 2013 at 18:57

I'm not sure, I think they were different roles. Town cryers were more involved in issuing public notices.
Whereas those "To o-clock, and all's well" chaps were different.

I got sidertacked.
The term brought back memories of Barry Cryer.
He wrote comedy for a lot of people.
Barry Charles Cryer OBE (born 23 March 1935) is a British writer and comedian. Cryer has written for many noted performers, including Dave Allen, Stanley Baxter, Jack Benny, Rory Bremner, George Burns, Jasper Carrott, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Dick Emery, Kenny Everett, Bruce Forsyth, David Frost, Bob Hope, Frankie Howerd, Richard Pryor, Mike Yarwood, The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise.

Sorry to keep you all, well some, waiting.
Had heard of 'gatewaiters' before. But saw them as being like doormen of the town.
In the good old days Leythers and other vagabonds would have been chucked out for the night.
But I don't think we were ever encouraged to shoot them with a longbow within the grounds of the Parish Church, after seven o'clock.

Waits/Waites
And me being me, must recount Mr Dodd's penchant for extolling the virtues Great Drum Of Knotty Ash.
He reckons everyone shuld have a big drum.
One thing they're handy for, according to Doddy, is finding out the time late at night, or early in the morning?
Residents of Wrightington Street take note.

A wise man once typed:
Where do you draw the line. Ignore idiots? Drop to their level (in which case they've won)?
I'm often reminded of the scenarios where a little lad in a playground will take a swipe at a big lad, safe in the knowledge that the big lads daren't be seen to retaliate.
If they do, they are 'big bullies'. Thus, the little lad continues with impunity. Considering himself bulletproof.

Guess what was right yesterday.?
Presumably corrected yesterday, but I couldn't swear to it.
It'll need altering again soon.

There's 0 wrong with that!
@qikipedia: In 1949 a flock of starlings landed on the minute hand of Big Ben, slowing it down by five minutes

A flock of starlings killed somebody by getting caught in a body stocking too, Jo Anne.
At least accoring to one of Michael Palin's 'Ripping Yarns' (The Curse Of The Claw)

Curse Of The Claw
Can't find the qoute. But Kevin's parents were stereotypical Victorian prudes.
I think it was his father who had invented an 'all over' bodystocking to preserve modesty. Possibly unisex.
One, if not both parents died due to starlings.

A murderation of starlings?

I won't give the local name for them.
Likewise I won't give too much detail about the Ripping Yarns episode. It did contsin naughty words.

Yes, not even a murmur ( or there could be a ticking off!).

I like the murmuration explanation.
Google tells me the name I often hear starlings called, is more commonly used to describe Red Kites and similar.

Tenniel Evans
'Ripping Yarns: The Curse of the Claw (1977) [Kevin's Father]: Suffocated (off-screen) when a flock of starlings become entangled in his "modesty covering"; his death is mentioned in Michael Palin's narration over a shot of Tenniel walking home from church wearing the covering. He later comes back to life after the curse is lifted and time starts turning back. (Played for comic effect.)

I've only ever known them as starlings.

You've obviously never been 'blessed' by them, Jo Anne.
Just rememberes; Sheppies.
They are alson known as Shappies.

They are alson known as Shappies.
Should read:
Just remembered; Sheppies.
They are alson known as Sheppies.
Lord knows what 'shappies' are.

And Red Kites are sheppies, too?

I know a Kite Hawk swooped down and nicked Lofty's dinner.
Possibly corned beef.

Not sheppies' pie?

Gerroff.
Google time. It was a very corny (no pun intended) scene.
Meanwhile, have a little chicken tikka.

I forget his name.
Google time again.

I can see the resemblance.
The Chuckle Brothers, Barry (born 24 December 1944) and Paul (born 18 October 1947), from Rotherham, are real-life brothers and are the youngest in a showbiz family of eight

Surprising how many of the same odds and sods appeared in the various Perry and Croft productions.
My favourite example is when Jeffrey 'Spike' Holland appeared in IAHHM prior to becoming a yellowcoat.

I have posted that previously.

Or even the BBC.

Sod off!
In fact, Jo Anne, Jefrey Holland appeared as a different character in IAHHM. He was part of a group who hadn't sen a woman for nearly two years and he took quite a shine to Gloria.
Bombardier Beaumont (Gloria) was quite flattered.
But the Sergeant Major reluctantly warned him (Gloria) that things could turn rather 'nasty'.
