The hospital was the maternity hospital in Wigan up untill Summer of 2004.
The hospital has been demolished now for houses.

Interesting thread
Note the name is Billinge, Pattyann.
Not meaning to be pedantic, I mention it as you aren't local and may be goiing off word of mouth.
Some of Wigan's finest were born in the hospital.
Even though it could debar us from being true Wiganers.

Gareth - The hospital was NOT the maternity hospital in Wigan. Part of it WAS the maternity hospital in Billinge.
Pattyann's grandfather wouldn't have died in the maternity unit and neither was he a Wiganer. He was from Hindley!

The Wigan Union Infirmary later to become Billinge Hospital consisted of an Occupational Health Department, Psychiatric Wards, Children's Ward, Female Surgery and Male Surgery Wards, Gynaecology and Cardiology Departments, Geriatric Wards and The Roy Hartley Maternity Department, as stated before the hospital was demolished in 2004, the estate built on the maternity site is called Hartley Green Gardens. You can also see photos and other information in the links below, and photos from off the wiganworld album below too.

Hope you find the information you need Patty, cheers dostaf.
There were a lot more photos of the empty wards, theatre etc, on the twenty eight days later website, but they must have been taken off, pity really as they were taken just a short while after it had closed.
Thinking back I must have spent many hours in the subways under there spraying for cockroaches, it was like being in the tropics with the heat and the steam escaping from the pipes which was ideal conditions for cockroaches, though they were even outside in the gardens, orchard and greenhouses at the back of the hospital, I sometimes wonder when passing if the house owners have ever seen any — they'll probably think they are just garden beetles though.

Pattyann, have you got an Alan Baxendale in your tree. I used to be mates with him when we were at school in Hindley? I think he lives in St Helen's now.

I have a Thomas Baxendale in my family tree who also lived in Hindley . He married my great Aunt Annie Prescott in April 1950 at St Peters , Hindley , very late in life . Thomas was a widower . He died at the family home on Atherton Road in December 1963 and is buried in Hindley Cemetery .

Tried the urbandesertion link but it doesn't work. Will keep looking.
I saw the 28dayslater photo's, it was such a shame some of it looked like they'd just left and closed the door. They'd even left the safe!
