Used to swim in rainer, only local flash with no fish, clearest water around Hindley. Swum in other flash--otherside of railway lines---GC ?? we just called it the flash, remember standing on dirt rucks watching police dragging for a suicide

hi dingerbell,
the g.c .was our swimming pool as kids .lovely place ,right at the bottom of a large slag heap,on one side ,the main railway line from bicki to wigan on the other and at its top end was a series of bridges and adjoining railway lines.
it was absoluotly filthy,to come across a dead cat or dog whilst swimming was not unusual. all the same we kids never seemed to be ill and no adults told us to keep out of it.
we would ask the signal man in his box if we could walk down the line to the gc and he would let us if no train was due.
the train drivers used to wave at us as they went past.
i was told that g.c stood for george cross but i don`t know how it got that name.
i have a map from 1906 it shows the railwaylines and the slag heap and there is a narrow void shown at the base of the heap but there is no name given to it .so i wonder when and how it got there. i did hear it was a bomb crater ,but i don`t know for sure.

Hi Vera/Dave, I have copied a section of a map and have put a few names of the f
flashes hope you can read them.
I think I need Dave's help to pull the pic in. I'll have to be told how to do it .

Vera, if you have that map in digitised format, i.e. a jpg file, it's very easy to upload it, if, however, it's in the form of a printed document, you'll need to have it scanned first, then digitised for uploading.
