Hello Paddy

I seem to think that it is the family who pay to announce a death in Newspapers the same when the the Obituary is entered, perhaps someone can enlighten os on this.

It can be a good idea to check old newspapers for announcements/reports of Births Marriages and deaths.

I am not sure what year this was started.

before 1837 the BMD were recorded in the Parish registers but to be more acurate in these registers were recorded Baptisms (not all babies were Baptised or were sometimes Baptised as adults)

Marriages and Banns of marriages & Burials it is always worth checking these Church records.

After 1837 when registration started BMD but these don't have information of where people were buried.

Some Cemetaries have an online grave search which can be very helpful to families and family historians it is a shame this service isn't provided in every town - St Helens have a brilliant one

St Helens Grave search

this records people who were buried in St Helens cemetery/Cremetorium and Newton-le-Willows cemetery.

Freda is doing a fantastic job of recording the burials in the Wigan area cemeteries.

Hi Paddy
If your looking for death records, for Lancashire go to
www.lancashireBMD.org they have records from most parishes from 1837 to 1975. Although it is sketchy after 1960.
If you lok in the newspapers that are available, the death notices always appear in the same section of the paper, so you don't ned to read through the whole paper. Also so editions only printed the death notices on the Friday or Saturday editions.

If you know what year they died, you can look through old copies of the observer at the history shop, you may find them in the obituaries there.
