Your link was to a Franch article.

Crab Apples!

"In the afternoon of 'Fair Day' the town relaxed with a succession of sporting activities, some being ancient and traditional. The Sports always commenced after the "scattering of apples" at Midday, now known as the Parade of the Apple Cart... it is thought that it was a celebration of the completion of the harvest when crab apples and other wild fruits were gathered ... Crab apples are too sour for the modern taste, therefore sweeter varieties of apple are used these days."

So, a change is as good as harvest.

I thought eating sourer apples would be all the better for gurning though.

Just for that , you can have the very long joke (shortened version) about the scientists who wanted to know why crabs walked sideways.

You really drag this one out when telling it, various tests etc, clever filming, psychological reports, The works.

Eventually, one boffin decides to use a microphone in an aquarium to listen to see if there is any communication. (Similar to dolphin song)

Months and months go by, trying different frequencies etc. Eventually, one day, as all the crabs are walking about (sideways) a faint singing type noise is heard.

EUREKA!

Here's a sample from a secret document;
