Hawkley Hall: Farm?

Started by: ol mother reilly (7)

Please does anyone know if there was a farm attached to Hawkley Hall around the 1890-1900s? If so, who owned the Hall and would they have rented out the farm to tenants?

Thanks!

The family that built Hawkley hall was the Moleneux family I think they were relatives of Lord Derby from Knowsley who were the Stanley family I think they were related by marriage. The hawkley estate was large so there probably was a farm attached to it.The last people to own it I dont know the names of, Wigan history shop will know.

Thank you both - British History On-line was helpful, right up to the point I needed to know about! I have mailed the History Shop (at least, I think I have!) to see if they have any information.

I went to Junior School with a girl called Dorothy Jameson who lived at that farm in the 50's. It was at the very end of what is now Carr Lane Hawkley Hall. It was just fields at that time.

hi i am looking for any information about the history of the old Hawkly Hall and its connection to the old Ben Jonson pub at the top of Fulbeck Ave. Thanx

I wouldn't think there would be a connection between the Hall and the pub, any more than the pub was built on land held by the same people who held the hall. Hawkley Hall has links with Croxteth Hall. Hawkley was part of Pemberton and is covered in Pemberton's History. Pemberton/Hawkley

Tonker, Many thanks for the information regarding Pemberton/Hawkley. There is mention of the Holland family going back to around the time that my brother and I have traced back to. The name Moulinex could possibly be part of it as well.

I used to spend a lot of time at Hawkley Hall Farm, being at school with the Jameson children. Frank,Barbara and the youngest Dorothy.

I never knew there was a connection with the Ben Jonson, but there was a disused driveway that ran to join the main road near to the Ben Jonson, this driveway had a gate at the end that was kept locked.
This driveway,Iwas told was, in the olden days, the main driveway of the house.
The locked gate was a grand afair, made of Metal spiked railings, like these reproduction cemetary gates posher houses have today.
This driveway was never used, the only access was from the end of what is now known as Carr Lane.

Was it the Frank Jameson who had the shops?

Tonker,
I lost touch with Frank when we grew up,but I did hear he had a shop in Ashton and was a member of Orrell R.U.
I did see his Father in Weymouth,1981,and was suprised that he still remembered me and knew my name.
It was him who told me what had happened to Hawkley Hall.

I used to go with my dad up to the old Hawkley Hall. He used to be the water bailiff for the "three ponds" and had to make sure they weren't over fished and that nobody without a permit was fishing. Mr Jameson always gave us a big bag of the small hard pears off the trees that lined the road to the Hall.

I went to School in the 90's at Hawkley Hall High School now just round the corner to where the Old Hall once stood. I never remember the actual Hall but we did go on a field trip (Up the road) to see what was let over. I remember seeing 2 doors that where once in the cellar about 20 Yds from the old gate posts that lead into a tunnel that was padlocked. Our history teacher at the time told us that they led up to the Old Ben Johnson Pub (Cottage). Is there any evidence to support this theory?

Hi Susie can i just ask where bouts on Hawkley your house is please? My partners grandma used to work at the powder works and i'm just trying to find out as much as i can about it as I grew up on Ashby Road and had never even heard of it, i thought at first it must of been somewhere near to where to school now is but I have just read on another site that the entrance to the works was roughly where the co-op is now, so I'm guessing the house I've grown up in must of been (in a really freaky way) built on the very same land she been on about. please help if you can??

m155hel1. Ilive on Rosley Rd.Just round the corner from you.We have lived here for 18 years. The garden was a mess when we moved in and we have a very very long garden. We don't have anything at the back of the garden just the Scotsmans Flash etc. When we attempted to do something with the garden we came across a path that turned out to be what we think was part of the walls of the old Powder works. We started to dig and couldn't seem to get to the bottom of it, needless to say it is still there but is now under Decking
