Wigan Sea Views

Started by: ayrefield (4465)

I know that on a good clear day the Irish sea from Liverpool to Hesketh Bank can be seen from the tops of Billinge, Parbold and Harrock Hills, but; considering that there are a few cottages and houses named Sea View around Wigan and district, does anyone know if the Irish sea can actually be viewed from them - or is it just a quirky name given to the buildings for a bit of fun by the builders.

Neither Liverpool or Hesketh Bank are on the Irish Sea.
And neither Billinge, Parbold or Harrock, Hills are in Wigan.

So, given that the highest point in Wigan is approximately 170 feet above sea level and that Wigan is approximately 20 miles from the Irish sea at it's closest point, it follows that, due to the radius of Earth and given a tangent from the highest point in Wigan, it is impossible to view the Irish Sea without creating a dip in the horizon of at least 230 feet.

Work it out for yourself, using these formulae!

Oy - I didn't say those hills were in Wigan.

Those new breed of Village People in your photo, complete with Doc Martens, are they from the Ashvegas or Haydock village and do any admit to being a Wiganer.

I should imagine, if any of them were a 'Wiganer', they would readily admit to it. Although, as you limit them to originating from either Haydock or Ashton, why would they claim to be 'from Wigan'?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

You can see the sea from Batty's (Oxfam) corner sometimes.

I'll give you a clue.

There's an old phrase about showing one's backside at the top of Wigan. (Or sometimes Batty's Corner)

I don't know about any 'old phrases', but if you want to bet me that you can see the sea from Oxfam Corner, in Wigan, I'll take you on!

My £10,000 to your £100!

And I'll let you knock all the buildings down and fell all the trees for that. And you still won't see it!

I know that I live in New Zealand - and I know that Billinge isn't in Wigan (or it wasn't when I 'wur' a lad) but did you know that :-
It is a documented and accepted fact that from the top of Billinge Hill, you could see 16 (sixteen) counties.
Lancashire - Yorkshire - Cheshire - Anglesey - Flintshire - Caennarvonshire - Denbighshire - Merionethshire - Montgomeryshire - Westmorland - Cumberland - Kirkcudbrightshire - Isle of Man - Derbyshire - Staffordshire and Shropshire.

I dont know exactly what we could see but it was Water and a lot of it on a clear day when we were going to Southport on a lovely sunny day on our Bikes /Joan Buckley and I and others we would stop at the top of Parbold hIll and you could see it shimmering in the sun, then off we would go free wheeling down Parbold hill but of the climb when we came back thats another story , we used to ride up the hill first going to one side and then the other whoever reached the top first payed for the drinks in the old Railway wagon perched on the now Car park that was the start of the cafe , you paid for the drinks at the cottage which is of course the new Restaurant

Wigan sea views, my riggert!

Although, not very long ago (in the great scheme of things) Wigan was an island. And, when it was an island, it would have had sea views but there would have been nobody alive to see them.
The irony of it all!

The only irony of this is,if it was an island, and nobody was there to see it,how the hell do you know it was an island in the first place
