was there ever

a hospital on Frog Lane? number 75 by perchance.
On the old geneology trail once more and on a few death certs the place of death keeps coming up with 75 Frog Lane, was it a hospital or could it even have been the workhouse, anyone shed any light on this please

It was Wigan Union Workhouse, later Frog Lane Geriatric Hospital where Markland Court is now opposite the cleansing department.
For details.

Art
thanks a million for that, ive just found exactly the paragraph I was looking for
"From 1930, the former workhouse became Frog Lane Public Assistance Institution providing care for the elderly and chronic sick. After the setting up of the National Health Service in 1948, it became Frog Lane Welfare Home and later as Frog Lane Hospital. It finally closed in around 1970. The buildings were demolished in the 1990s and housing now occupies the site."
this answers a lot of outstanding questions for me
Very Much Appreciated
If I ever meet you I'll buy you a very large Brandy

Steff 63, Thanks but I never touch the stuff
I took an elderly friend of mine & his wife into that hospital in 1970.( I was on the LCC ambulance service)
The man died the day after, his wife the day after that.
Some, thought that the very idea of going in the "Workhouse", saw them off...Very sad

Steff
You can't see the picture because it is a photobucket picture and you have said before that you are banned from viewing photobucket at work

rf22vul . My home station was Standish, but I went on reserve to Hindley(the old station, Cross St) Platt Bridge (the one that took it's place, Stanley St) & Billinge.
I did an advanced course at Wigan, Pottery Rd, after we joined forces from Lancs County Amb to Greater Manchester NHS...

Do you have a photobucket, or similar, online account to upload your images to?
They must be on the internet before you can download them to forums, messageboards etc.
I did PM you this morning about this

I didnt know that was were the hospital used to be but remember my mum telling me that my grandad who died around 1963 was terrified when he was ill of bieng sent to Frog Lane hospital as he always thought of it as the workhouse that it had been when he was younger .After seeing the old pictures of it I'm not suprised.
