I think it was the name of the buildings on the right, not 100% on that though.

There was a roller skating rink there in 1909! It had been a brewery warehouse before that and Wednesday December 13th 1911 it became the Palace Picture Theatre.

You can also see the Derby Arms on the corner of Chapel Lane which was across the road from the brewery of Henry Robinson.

Wasn,t the pub opposite the Derby Arms called the Brewers arms and then the Palace cinema is nearer to the camera.
I don,t remember the Palace being so big, could part of the building on the right be the HIPP?

So the rather splendid building on the right is where the carbuncle that is Brocol house is now?

Gwim,
They are great pictures, thank you for taking the time to put them on.
It is where Brocol Hse is now,but I think the building nearest to the horses on the corner of Chapel lane was the Brewers Arms, slightly set back from the road.
The large doorway looks like it could be the typical entrance to a brewery for drayhorses!
The smaller doorway looks like it could be the entrance to the Palace cinema but it also could be part of the building in the foreground as the architecture is similiar, maybe Ianmcl knows more.
I know the pub and cinema were there on that site,I have been in both, only legally in one
Sorry Ianmcl I missed your earlier post about the brewery.

If you look carefully at the top picture:
The Derby Arms in the white pub that is sticking out - the Brewers forms the very last bit of the large building on the right hand side.

In Brian Murphy's book on Wigan cinemas he has a copy of this photograph and writes:

"A postcard from the early 1900's showing the building converted from a roller skating rink into the Palace Cinema.

The entrance to the pit stalls was through the large archway"

It isn't often I disagree with Art but on this occasion . . .

Pubs and Cinemas: my two fave subjects - and both on the same site - heaven!

I think there was one entrance and two exits to the Palace.
The main entrance was the smaller door and that was also an exit,as was the one at the side in the yard from the front seats.

There is a picture on Science and Society picture library which shows patrons leaving by both exits in the 1930,s.
I remember gaining access to the circle through the smaller door in 1958.

The entrance to the Palace cinema when I used to go there, was up the side of the building along a covered walkway, at right angles to King St, with a handrail down the middle & entering the cinema just a few rows back from the screen.
The floors were bare wood & that made them noisy, 'specially for the clog wearers.
