I think I've found all the Wigan Warriors' ones online, Tom.

I've sent an email to WLCT to ask if a blazer badge of Wigan's, and/or The Metropolitan Borough of Wigan's, Coat of Arms is available, too.

Elizabeth,
I would think that STANDARDS at 11 The Wiend would have a template of the Wigan coat of arms for an embroidered blazer badge.
I got some from there years ago.

The true coat of arms of Wigan is the 'Ancient & Loyal' crest proudly worn on the shirts of Wigan Warriors.

Long may it remain!

'Wigan' doesn't have a Coat of Arms.

The ones referred to here are the Coats of Arms of the LOCAL AUTHORITY (local government - THE COUNCIL if you will)

Who, in their right mind, would want to walk around displaying the 'badge' of a council like ours? Why display the arms of the council you love to hate?

You're all daft!

oh dear Tonker you are yet again spouting rubbish.
The <Ancient and Loyal > coat of arms was granted by the college of heralds in 1922 following the request from the then council-that is where the <for the alderman, mayor> etc comes in -not for their personal use ,but in representation of the town.
The representation of the town can easily be seen ,for those who famaliarise themelves with armorial meanings.
The town is well represented on the coat of arms with images dating back to the medieval era, at least.

Posted by: tonker (28997)

Congratulations, Vera, on spouting the same (true) rubbish as me!

YES, as I SAID, the 'coat of arms' belongs to THE COUNCIL and NOT to Wigan.

By the way, those who 'familiarise themslves with armorial meanings' will know that a council's arms are merely 'CIVIC HERALDRY', not ARMS (in the true sense).

Keep taking the Wigan Pills, Vera. You're getting dafter by the minute!

History of Wigan Town
Wigan was an important Roman military station, known as Coccium; it lay on the Roman road from Warrington and Chester to the north, and close to the road from Manchester.

Wigan was granted its first royal charter in 1246, making it one of the four oldest boroughs in Lancashire – Manchester was only a village while Wigan was an important royal borough!

The Romans however developed a midden on it's outskirts for the lower classes & named it:

HAYDOCK

Hello Elizabeth - I made the same mistake as you.

I have just got a reply from Wigan's Tourist Information Centre:

I have contacted our history shop regarding your enquiry. However they are unable to find everyone who can supply you with the crests.

We have found images of the crest online (wikipedia). We wondered if it would be possible for you to ask to have the images embroidered. A local school supplier, Slater's, does embroidery for work wear and may possibly be able to help you.

If I find out any further information regarding the coat of arms I will contact you. If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Art, according to the Academics of Roman Studies, and going off the Antonine Itinerary, Wigan was NOT 'Coccium' at all!

It's just a rumour!

However, there's no point in explaining the historical importance of Wigan, as I already know. But, the fact still remains that Wigan (the place) doesn't have a 'coat of arms'.
It's governing authority (the council) had, but they haven't got one anymore.

Read what a 'borough' is, and what a borough 'was' back in 1246.

I didn't delete, I edited a spelling error. (There to they're)

Seems a lot of the 'war effort' stuff went to waste. Dumped at sea, I think. The main point of the excercise was to give folk the feeling of doing their bit.

Vera, and anyone else who doesn't know, ....

A 'place' cannot hold a coat of arms. Any (official) coat of arms, insignia, badge etc., must belong to a person, group of people etc..
Wigan itself does not hold, and never has held, a coat of arms.

The local authority holds a coat of arms, currently the coat of arms is for the ENTIRE Metropolitan Borough, which means it's the COMBINED coat of arms for the fourteen town councils that make up the Metropolitan Borough Council.

The previous coat of arms was awarded to the local authority of Wigan County Borough, which was a union of both Wigan AND Pemberton town councils.

So there, Vera, it DOES belong to the council, and that's telling you!

PS. You're correct in saying "Wigan has not been confirmed as Coccium". That's because it can't be, because it wasn't!

Academics of Roman Studies, from several Univerities, have observed the distances recorded in the Antonine Itinerary and concluded that the nearest location of Coccium, to Wigan, would be somewhere between Blackrod and Adlington. Others say it shows further to the north-east, towards Belmont.
Of course, some Roman activity took place where Wigan stands today, as it did all around England, but historic records show that it wasn't called 'Coccium'.

They removed the towns true Coat of Arms in the 1920's by replacing the Moot Hall one.

The Coat of Arms can still be seen above the current Town Hall, Old Town Hall, History Shop, inside the Parish Church and on Mesnes Park Gates.

It is very expensive for a single badge in the region of £30 to have one made.

In that tense, it's 'teach' not learn. Did they not 'teach' thee owt in Leyth?

Explorations, get it right. You're referring to 'the borough seal', Wigan council didn't have a 'coat of arms' until 1922.

Tonker, you got before me regarding the -learn-teach, and if he had seen posting earlier I had apologized for the heading . having aquired a new computer the key board is very sensative to the touch and thats why it came out wrong, it seems you only have to breathe on it for it to make a mistake , and I couldn't correct it once completed . I just thought it would be nice for my son as then when wearing it anyone else from this area would be able to say " Hello".Similar to when he wears his T T tee shirt (he used to ride his vintage bike) people always stop for a chat, and its nice for him so far from home ,yes I am a softy Mum and don't want him to feel lonely , oh go on and now say ahh I dont care
