Smart phone
Has of November Ryanair are stopping paper boarding passes for all their flights and you have to book in using your smart phone A spokesperson said 80% of their passengers have a smart phone already. But that leaves 20% who do not have a phone who are now unable to fly
So for every million passengers 200 thousand will not be flying with Ryanair.

It will save a few trees, and the old folk who don't already have smartphones won't be flying on aeroplanes, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I’ve not looked, so I don’t know, but, at a guess, I’d say that’s bollocks! And don’t forget, I must know everything because Bollock-Chops Baz says I do!

H said old folk don't have Smart Phones? He's an old folk so doesn't he have one? What a presumption!

Tonker this story is straight from the boss himself and the story is in a few national papers today..
Big Harold what makes you think older people don't want to fly and a lot are being left behind because they don't have a smart phone or a computer.. i have both but still prefer going into a travel agents to book a holiday and I have just picked up my paper boarding passes for my next holiday

Well, I use Ryanair very often and I can’t see any difference in paper boarding passes or phone boarding passes, as both are just the same QR code and the reader at airports can read both.
Unless Peter is describing a change wrongly?
What’s the reason for this?
Anyroadup, it won’t bother me because I use my phone anyway!

Tonker this comes into force on the 3rd November were you have to book in before you leave for the airport using your smart phone

I have just had a look at the regulations which come into force in November and it clearly states that QR codes has to be accessible for all passengers including those who do not have a smart phone. It then says that a QR code can be printer off by the passenger on their printer which I assume can then be presented and zapped in the same way as with a smart phone.
In other words, no diffrent than presenting a voucher at a pub/restaurant by both ways.
Or is it?

Luddite definition
Yoo old fogies should move into the modern world and embrace all of this wonderful technology which we now have available.
WHY - doo yoo want to queue up in a bank, when online banking is so much better ?
WHY - doo yoo want to use a piddling piece of paper, when yoo board a plane, train, bus etc
You are the sort of persons who would stick to riding a horse instead of getting a car

Are you happy to have to travel miles for a personal interview with a bank manager or go to order and then collect a substantial amount of cash
And what is the diference in showing a QR code on a piece of paper which is no different than showing it on a phone screen.
Oh, and not everybody wants to do internet banking for security reasons which is only to be expected when despite any security, bank accounts can and are being accessed by thieves.
And you are the type of taxi driver who would refuse a fare, if they cannot pay by card or phone.
As well as being happy just paying for a packet of crisps or a bottle of cola either by card or phone.
Or even become an android controlled by others!

Owd Codger
Why would I want to have a personal interview with a bank manager, when an electronic interview would suffice ?
Showing it on a phone is much easier.
Banks have always attracted the attention of thieves, and they always will do, both in cash terms and electronic terms, but in all honesty I think that it is much safer to moved funds around electronically, than it is to move cash around physically.
UBER taxi drivers will not accept cash, and payment is made to the company not the driver, which makes it a lot safer for the taxi driver, in terms of being physically attacked (robbed) and also it ensures that payment is made for the journey, so I am all in favour of cashless taxi journeys.
Paying for a packet crisps or a can of pop by card or phone is a lot easier than using cash.
You android remark suggests that a cashless society makes it easier for the authorities to control the populace, which I think is probably true.

“ UBER taxi drivers will not accept cash,”, says he, who should know better!
Uber, early this year, Manchester Centre to Ashton, 1 drop off, then to Wigan, 1 drop off, £32 CASH!

O.C. I agree with you. And, re Ryanair boarding passes too.
You ‘book’ the flight on Ryanair website. You pay for it when you book it. Within the 24 hours before your flight, you ‘check in’ and get your QR Code and seat number.
Up to now, it’s all been done ‘on line’. There’s no other way.
If you have a paper boarding pass, it has to be got on line.
You present a QR code to 2 readers at the airport. One to get you into departures and one to get you on the plane (boss, the plane).
I’d say it doesn’t matter what it reads, as long as it reads it.
Set of Merchant Bankers!

apls……
I don’t like the way you lump all elderly people together as fogies. I cannot remember the last time I was in a bank, I do all my banking and other types of business on line. Also in my mid seventies I did a round the world trip alone after booking EVERYTHING on line flights, ships, hotels, visas and estas without the need for a travel agent, not one hitch. I am now a little older but will carry on being modern . By the way it’s my 85th next week.

admire what you have done, I also have not had any
problems doing business on line but a few people on
wiganworld treat it as monster and they have never
used it so how can they criticise it if they dont use it ,
i do think a lot of older people have no problem useing it

Surely, it is the smart phone that has become a monster for the many who have to keep looking at one?
Be it walking down or pushing a pram in the street, looking at one in a restaurant while eating, paying for tickets to watch a sorting event but keep looking at their phone, etc, etc
Sad people living sad lives perhaps!

First of all Happy Birthday in advance
But what makes you think that I have lumped {{ALL}} elderly people together has old 'Fogies' and I am now a pensioner myself.
No, I don't consider all pensioners to be old Fogies.
definition of an old fogey
"An old fogey is someone—usually older—who’s seen as overly conservative, stuck in their ways, or resistant to change. Think of someone who grumbles about “kids these days” or insists that everything was better in the good old days. It’s often used playfully or teasingly, though it can carry a bit of a sting if said with disdain."

No Visa, No money etc. etc. I went to Russia 12 years ago and one of the group had all his tickets, documents on his phone ( A fairly new concept) When we got to Moscow He couldn't get out of the Airport . Took ages to sort it ..

As I mentioned in Tom's 14,893 thread, people with mobile phones are becoming more and more dependent on them to run their lives. In that topic I mentioned a lot of things about them, including young people who walk around with them in front of them instead to their ears, totally oblivious to the world around them and I've sometimes had to slam on hard in my car to avoid hitting one that steps out into the road without looking.
I agree with everything Owd Codger said in his last post, but I'd like to take umbrage with Mister APLS for calling older people "old fogies." As I said in the previously mentioned topic of Tom's, I do see myself as a Luddite, dinosaur and old-fashioned and yes, maybe I am set in my ways to a certain degree, but at least I don't rely on a phone to run my life for me.
The only things I do online is pay my all my utility bills, make doctor appointments, etc, using my computer. I pay in shops by Direct Debit. Only last night I was second in a queue in a shop and the guy had bought several items which were being packed for him and, once done, he got out his phone and started to fiddle with it to find the method of paying. He could have been doing that whilst his bags were being packed. I always have my cards ready whilst mine are being packed, so I hold nobody up behind me.
See what you've started, Peter.

The same thing about someone fiddling with a phone in trying to pay has happen with me three or four times in pubs and a supermarket and I have also seen it happening with other people.
As for apls and his comments about old fogies, he is not on his own in coming out with that kind of comment these days about the elderly as unlike ourselves, they have never been taught to respect older people like we were by our parents and grandparents.

Well Owd Lad, As I said, I don't know why folk have to wait for the last minute to take out their phones and start fiddling with it, especially if there's a long queue behind them. Tonight it was only me. There was another time though when a bloke was at the counter on the phone yapping whilst the salesperson waited for him. There were three in front of me but I'd had enough and I shouted to him to get off the bl**dy phone and get out of everybody's way and he did straight away! I just can't suffer fools or selfish people.
In general, I shrug off badly worded comments about others, putting it down to thoughtlessness or rudeness, but it doesn't usually bother me, until it does, if you see what I mean; and that's when I have to have a snap back. We've no idea how old APLS is, but he can't be much younger than the rest of us, otherwise he wouldn't join in with "old fogies."
