That and a Market Hall are as different as chalk and cheese.

Will it last longer than the Galleries?

OC unless they get more traders using it then it will fold very quickly. Plenty of ducting to gather dust and like the market now a waste of height and open space which will a lot of heat in the winter,Do these people who design these buildings not know hot air rises thus the roof will be heated but the stall holders will be cold

Peter, they won't get 'traders' unless there's 'customers'. And there's not much chance of that, is there?

So a question ?

If the top end of the Galleries had been retained, that being the bit where the clock was and all of Marketgate, and a bit of Woodcock Square to allow openair access to Makinson Arcade, could those retained buildings have been transformed into virtually an exact version of what is shown in the artistic impressions, and at a fraction of the cost, and it would have probably been finished and opened by now ?

Absolutely correct, Tommy.

But that was probably too easy for the planners. They have to justify their salaries.

Looking at the photos, it's just an updated clone of the old galleries!

Cheshire Puss

That is exactly what I thought, it doesn't look much different to the Galleries, and I think that those pipes look awful.

The design and construction of the £156 million redevelopment of the former Galleries site including the new market hall is by three companies from the private sector!

Companies which are seen as specialists in urban renewal of town centres, regeneration of seaside resorts etc

That has to be one of the ugliest pieces of "architecture" I've seen in a while. If anyone is wondering what the style of that is, it's called Brutalist, and it's not hard to understand why.

Like Peter said as well "why not just call it Wigan Market Hall?"

Fettlers might come from repairing stuff, so if you want, your watch fettling because it's stopped or your shoes are leaking, you will be able to get them fettled.
Also, if you bought a pair of curtains from a charity shop and they are a bit too long, you will be able to get them made shorter by a sewing fettler.

BH I know what a "Fettler" is and it has nothing to do with a market hall/cafe

"BH I know what a "Fettler" is and it has nothing to do with a market hall/cafe", announced Peter, authoritatively.

It could be, though, Peter.
If Mick / Harold (large or small) (as the case may be), Slipped into a cafe and ordered a 'Shevington Kebab', which is a cucumber sandwich, cut corner to corner with the crusts cut off, and it came with the crusts still present, it would have to be taken away and "fettled" to Shevington Standards!

Naturally, I disagree, Owd Clodhopper. He's only a councillor. Probability makes McKenzie-Folan's far more likely. And it sounds posher!

You know best, as usual!

I only know that McKenzie- Folan is a paid employee from outside Wigan who could leave for a even higher paid job, whereas Molyneaux is a local person who is the leader of the Council until he decides to retire or be ousted in an election which in Wigan is very unlikely!

Owd Bodger, you're correct in saying "McKenzie-Folan is a paid employee".
She's paid by the Government to run Wigan Council, on their behalf, whereas Molyneux is leader of the 'councillors'.
McKenzie-Folan is the CEO, the 'Boss' of the bosses

The postion of a Chief Executive like all Council Officers is advertised by the Council and the Councillors then decide on the the best applicant for the position and the salary as advertised is paid by the Council.

No Chief Executive or anyone in local government is appointed by the government as all postions are advertised either inrenally or externally in accordance with laid down proceedures of the Council.

Owd 'Un,
Council CEOs are government employees, as are all the council directors. They are employed by the local authority, which is part of the government's structure, alike to a government department. They manage local government operations and they are politically neutral.

Councillors, on the other hand, are elected representatives of the residents of electoral 'wards'.
They are paid an allowance by the council, but are not government employees. They can be members of political parties.

Raaaaight?

Seeing that for the last sixteen years of my working life, I was employed by the Council where I knew a lot about proceedures and having just spoken on the telephone to a member of my family who has been an officer with a nearby local council, I have been informed that no Chief Executive is ever appointed to any Council by the Government and when a chief Executive is needed, the position has to advertised externally. The applicants are as I said earlier then have to be interviewed by a panel of Councillors who then recommend the successful applicant to a full meeting of the Council for ratification of the appointment.

With respect to you, I suggest you stick to things you know a lot about like working down a pit and selling window blinds!
