Byrom house in Haydock

Started by: muckus (39)

Bit of a longshot but does anyone know of a Byrom house in Haydock

"Ellen Hale said that William Byrom b.
1710 son of Henry, was a bitter and resentful man who tried to live as his fathers did on a small property in Haydock once his grandfather's and made a poor job of it. That is all we know of him save what the pedigree and lawyers letters show.'

He was my x6 Great Grandfather, his older brother gambled away the family fortune from the Byroms of Byrom and ended up in debtors' prison

The main properties were but when John Byrom died in 1702, the elder son inherited

Samuel Byrom of Byrom, son of John and
Elizabeth, born cl685 inherited all the
Byrom properties including Parr Hall and
Byrom Hall. These properties like many
in Lancashire and Cheshire were held in
trust and passed by the 99 years or
three generations fee tail. This trust
expired just before Samuel succeeded on
the sudden death of his father, and be-
fore a new one was created, which was
usually on the marriage of the heir.
Samuel never married. He was a disso-
lute character called "Beau Byrom" who
gambled away his entire fortune and was
in Fleet prison for debt in 1729. Dr.
John Byrom of Kersall Cell, poet and in-
ventor of a shorthand system, had a note
from him• 22 May 173 5 when Beau was lodg-
ing in London saying he had been in Ger-
many and France but was in poor circum-
stances and the good Doctor wrote Beau's
sister, Mrs. Goldbourne in Cheshire,
about his condition. Beau died in 1739.

So in effect, William, the younger brother, missed his share of the family fortune and ended up living in a smaller house in Haydock, which is probably why he was bitter. There was a legal wrangle for another 75 years or so. There were about at least 3 generations living there

John Byrom who died in 1702 had a well-documented line to Henry in 1562 who married Katherine Gerard etc

From what I read the different branches of the family didn't always get on and the Ashton/Haydock people got a bad deal

Yes, John Byrom was also my relative, Byrom House is farm near Leigh off the East Lancs Road. John was a relative of Lord George Byron the poet. There was also some information on the web about John's apparent association with the queen of that time and also his association with the jacobite underground movement and Manchester where he owned several properties such as the Wellington Inn and Ordsall Hall. A very interesting read. My 5th Great Grandfather was Samuel Crompton true inventor of the Spinning Mule.

Oh ... as regards to the debtor Beau Byrom who spent his later years in London's debtors prison, John tried to help get him out, via his wealthy aunt, but she would have nothing to do with him!
