SHOCK - HORROR

Started by: mollie m (8711)

I’ve just been for some petrol which I do once a month, and I spent exactly £30.00. Now, to be honest, I’ve never sat and thought about the price of petrol till I got home.

I took a mental note of how many litres I’d put in and it showed just under 2.5 at 2.44 so, when I got home I thought I’d try to do some sums (not my forte), and it worked out at slightly under 5 gallons. 5 into £30 = £6 per gallon.

Is that a high price, or average? Mind you, I suppose for some that's not bad seeing as I only spend that much per month.

If you have only put 2.5 litres in, you have have been rinsed at £30.
2.5 litres is just over 4 pints which equates to half a gallon?

Mollie, petrol is averaging roughly £5.79 a gallon now. Diesel £6.09.

its best not to think too much mollie, just put the petrol in and weep, we have no control over the price but, we can control to, use the car when needed, In my case , I walk , cycle and use the bus and my average fuel for the vehicle is £50 every 3 months,

Oh, yes, it's 8 pints to the gallon. Told you I was no good at sums.

So, Tonker, I wasn't far out with £6 per gallon. That's ludicrous when you think about it. Anyway, thanks for confirming. I'd never use smelly old diesel anyway. I believe it's to be banned fairly soon. Is that right?

I don't blame you, Tom. I don't have the options that you have, but I don't go far in my car anyway, so I suppose I don't spend much in the big plan of things.

Diesel cars are better, Mollie. I've got 5 diesel cars at the moment and 1 petrol car and 4 petrol motorbikes. 3 petrol generators, 2 petrol chainsaws and a petrol hedge-cutter, so I put carbon footprints all over the shop!

Indeed ya do Mr Tonks. Are you starting your own car salesroom?

Why is diesel better? It kicks out smoke, stinks, it's dearer, and is very bad for the old environment. I hate getting behind a bus because of the fumes.

Mollie, a diesel engine, especially a modern one, is much less harmful to the atmosphere than a petrol engine.

Okay, you know more about these things than I do.

Why do you have so many vehicles though? Do you just like collecting them? I love cars and would love to have a couple of older ones like a 1970s Ford Capri, Cortina Mk I and others from that era. I was devastated when I had to get rid of my Cortina Mk V.

Mollie I pay 127.9 pence a litre for petrol which works out at £5,80 a gallon. The other day on the M6 motorway services petrol was 149.9 pence a litre which is £6.79 a gallon I can still remember buying petrol at 35 pence a gallonIts still cheaper than beer which is between £25-£40 a gallon unless you sup at Spoons where it is about £16 a gallon

Decimal point in the wrong place, I suspect. 24.4 litres not 2.44 litres.
This would cost £30.00.

The price of Unleaded and Diesel fuel at Asda Newtown at the close of business yesterday Saturday 13th April 2025.

In July 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the price of Unleaded reached £1.95 a litre and that amounts to £8.86 per gallon.

So yesterday at Asda, Unleaded was just short of £1.27 a litre and that amounts to £5.76 per gallon.

So actually at this moment in time, Petrol is quite cheap in price, Unleaded was at this price 20 - 25 years ago, Petrol and Diesel prices go up and down faster than a tarts knickers doo

Thanks, Jim. Sorry about that. It's these daft right fingers of mine. Just checked my receipt again and I should have typed 22.44.

Mollie where did you fill up has going off your receipt you say you put 22.44 litres in your tank and spent £30= £1-33 per litre( approx).I would fill up elsewhere were it is at least 6 pence a litre cheaper and would give you 23-80 litres for £30 Every little helps

I fill up at the Pemberton garage, Peter, which is very local to me and only about a half mile away. To go further would mean using more petrol, which would cost me more in the long run.
