Fettlers

I'd be interested to know WW members' views of the naming of the new galleries... Fettlers!

Are they going to construct a shopping gallery complete with retail units as well as a market hall?

I was under the impression it was a hotel, cinema, golf course etc?

Fettlers, for a shopping arcade (sorry “mall” ) just sounds stupid.
At least they’ve not called it something totally inappropriate like “Colliers” or “Ancient and Loyal”!

I hope that Fettlers Wharf at Rufford don't complain about using their name.

A" fettler" is a maintenance person on the railways so is the market hall going to have a station?

Peter, a fettler is a fitter, you should know that. It’s relative to foundries doing rough iron castings for railways and other purposes. The rough castings are “fettled” to fit.
Raaaaight.

I worked at Horwich loco works and did stints in the iron and brass foundries and the fettlers job was a dirty and hard job.

The late boxer Peter Kane was a fettler working on the engine castings at the Vulcan loco works.

I'd have thought that was obvious.

Obvious, but a bit pathetic. As if pies are unique to Wigan, laaaaike!

The only thing unique to Wigan are Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls. (and they’re not as good as they used to be!)

PS: Oh, and saying “toot”!

I think it's a daft name for any sort of public building. I'd call it Wigan's Folly, or just The Follies, because of the mess the council have made with Wigan over the years.

Fettler's Wharf is a lovely place to go on a nice warm sunny day though.

1st Mate every one calls Wiganers pie eaters but the saying has nothing to do with pies . In fact at one stage St Helens had more pie shops than Wigan.

Does St Helens hold a world pie eating competition. Or did St Helens put a pie in space, or invent the Wigan Kebab/ barm joe?

Wiganers copied the Wigan kebab off Leigthers,it was called a slappy.

Wigan doesn’t hold a World Pie- Eating Contest. Tony Callaghan does. He also put a pie in space (errr, not really!) not Wigan.
A ‘pie on a barm cake’ is not a Wigan Kebab.

I thought a Wigan Kebab was a skewer with six pies on like a meyt pie, prater pie, pasty; meyt pie, prater pie, pasty.

I see the councillors are trying to impress the people of this once proud town Wigan, having demolished the galleries and left rate payers with our very own Hiroshima, by calling the next development Fettlers, surely it should be called destroyed.Roll on the May local elections l think the clowns will be voted back in by non caring rate payers .

When I was an Inspector at Garrett Airesearch, I used to sample castings from Duport Harper and John Williams foundries. I had to mark out and cut the castings to a drawing spec. The finished castings were always well 'fettled' before they came to us in the Inspection workshop.

A lovely fella named Joe Baker was the quality manager at John Williams. Joe would visit us every month and take me and Alan, who was my colleague, out for lunch to the White Lion at Upholland. Two hours later, we'd roll back into work after three pints and a hearty lunch.

We never rejected ANY of John Williams castings.

Didn't make any sense to do that, did it?

Unfortuanally, there are no local councils elections in May this year for people in Wigan to show what they think of the name or indeed anything else they pay Council Tax for each year.

Councillors used to be elected for every three years on a rotating basis but now to save costs, they are now elected for four years with every fourth year free from elections.
