Its 50 years since new years day became a bank holiday.

Every day is a bank holiday to me I just keep an eye on things just in case there is early closing on bank holidays then I go get what ever I need the day before

It was a 'forced Bank holiday' because the whole of the country was having massive, Absenteeism on New years day, and there was only one way to go and , that was, give um a bank hol and, showed us all that, voting with your feet will get you what you want,,,,

I never knew that New Years Day only became a Bank Holiday in 1975, so before that did banks open on New Years Day ?

1971 actually, coming into force in 1974. That makes it 51 years on Wednesday!

I remember when it was not a bank holiday and you could save a day from your annual holidays to get New Year’s Day off,most people did it.
