"Also they are trying to get us back into the EU after the people voted against it."
Times and peoples opinions change, Peter. The leave versus remain vote was extremely close. Only 4% more in favour of leaving, than remaining.
Yes, they did vote against it, but now they are realising that it has not been a bed of roses with no pot of gold ( or a hospital bed ) at the end of the rainbow.
Maybe it is time to put the vote out again to the people, and let them decide?

cheshirecat Yes opinions change. So why not have another General Election? We never got the full benefit of coming out of the the EU because the government aren't following up on their promises.

Time and time again we read about other EU states that want to break away from the union and have realised how bureaucratic it has become .These idiots who we have now want to either rejoin or water down what is in place now and it did not matter if the vote was 51/49% we voted OUT.

One of my sons works for a German company, albeit based in the USA. He’s been with them for 28 years and says that business in Germany is the worst that he’s known. For them it’s the opposite in the US and Mexico.
In the last 25 years GDP per capita has surged ahead in the US to a current level of over $86 per capita. In Germany for 2024 it’s $55 per capita.
Had the EU accepted that they should treat the UK as a Sovereign State, instead of a subordinate, after the referendum Brexit would have been more effective.
If the UK did revert to the EU would it be as a new member or a rejoiner. If the former membership of the Euro would be a condition that would be a severe problem for the UK. The fiscal discipline the EU would demand would entail harsh financial adjustments from the UK. The performance of Sterling against the Euro over the last 24 years that has seen the pound lose a quarter of its Euro value is an indication of how much belt tightening would be required on rejoining the EU.

Gaffer.
A quote from Key Currency a British independant financial business company.
"The Pound to Euro rate was €1.30 before the Brexit referendum. It hasn’t been back to those levels since.
In recent years, the economies of the UK and EU have barely grown at all. Higher interest rates have been needed to tame inflation, but at the same time they have hurt economic growth.
Logically, the UK would need to economically outperform the EU for the Pound to stage a big recovery. There hasn’t been much evidence of that since Brexit."

Before the election, Labour were supportive of WASP and also said that they had no plan to go back into the EU, but now in government they have backtracked on WASP and are now looking at ways to take us back into the EU by whatever backdoor means they can find.
As the native indigenous people of the USA would say "They speak with fork tongues".

I have asked this question a few times since we left the EU, and on the 31st January 2025 in about six weeks time, it will be five years since we left the EU, and my question is that if Brexit had never happened, there had never been a referendum, never been any desire from any group to leave the EU, but everything else had occurred, such as the Covid pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine etc, then how would the state of this country, be any different from what it is now ?

I think the same, due to all these problems Brexit has never had a fair chance.

It will need a decent number of years free from major distractions to determine the success or otherwise of Brexit.
Next year the Trump presidency will bring further disruption. He has a long held view that the EU, particularly Germany, has benefited from trade with America but expected the Americans to defend them militarily. Last year Germany’s trade surplus with the US was £52 billion. Applying tariffs to EU exports to the US appears to be his aim, if so the UK will probably not be affected.
There’s an interesting piece in today’s Times headed ‘The biggest victim of Brexit is not the UK but the EU.
If I get chance I’ll post it tomorrow.

Gaffer, you are already making excuses for next year. Lets get this year over first!
The "old chestnut" of blaming covid for the failure of brexit has emerged, once again. God knows how many times covid has been blamed for the failure of the previous government to deliver it?
£350.000.000 per week for the NHS, 40 new hospitals. Get it done!
I'm convinced that if some people got toothache they would blame it on covid. Laughable
Same excuse continually! Change the tune!
