Anyone Watch

The big snow of 47, last night on channel 5, I doubt very much that people in this day and age would be able to cope

How true we still went to school then but not the case today when conditions have not been as bad, did not see it but I was there.

I watched that on You Tube some while ago, but it's been taken off since for some reason, and only short clips are now available. I wouldn't have minded watching that again.

I wasn't born back then, but I do remember the winter of 1962 which was another bad year, and trudging to school through deep snow in my little wellie boots. No central heating in schools in those days, so sat in class wearing coats, hats, scarves and gloves, while teacher had a little electric fire under her desk. Happy days!

Like never having experience real poverty and hardship, many today have also never experienced very bad winters like in 47 and 62!

A bit of a snowfall now and it's panic stations by the softies!

I remember my dad taking me and my sisters to Wrightington fish ponds in 63. There was a man in a mini towing sledges round!

Owd Codger, you're right there. Was chatting with next door neighbour last night about those days and we remembered having ice on the INSIDE of our windows; no central heating; traipsing down the back yard to the toilet, and all that other good stuff.

The younger generation today wouldn't know how to cope in such extreme weather. Schools close down just because the boiler is on the blink; close down because there's ice on the ground and, if the little darlings fell, there'd be a claim in court; and all sorts of other poor excuses - just because it's a bit nippy outside.

In my last job, one of my elderly workmates was telling some of the younger staff about what you have described about what life was like in those day. When he mention that it was so cold in a bedroom that you did not want to get up, one spoke up and asked "did you not have central heating"

They don't know they are born today!

We used to have a range fireplace and my mum would put our pyjamas in the oven to warm them before we went to bed?
