It's not just the food shops either. The whole presence of the town has disappeared from what I read. Gone are the shoe shops, gents' outfitters, ladies clothing, Woolies, British Home Stores, Little Arcade with it's tiny shops that sold all sorts from buttons to newspapers and, of course, the old Market Hall with its outdoor stalls as well, and the adjacent fish shops.

Those were the sort of shops that brought warmth, cosiness and atmosphere to the way we shopped in Wigan many years ago, and what do we have in its place, apart from those mentioned by Tom? We also have druggies and drunks pestering people who are going about their business in a normal civilised manner. As I've said before, I haven't been into Wigan for 16 years and, from what I read regularly about its demise, it doesn't inspire me to return.

Goodbye Wigan. It was nice knowing you, even though it's not your fault.

When I went past the new Aldi a few weeks ago there was only one entry for cars off Wigan Road .and I bet its fun turning right off the car park with the amount of traffic using this road At the time could not see if there was an entry off Nicol Road.?

There are two entry/exits Peter and there is no indications as yet of, ' in' and out directions so, Its a free for all until someone with an iota of traffic management steps in and draws some arrows,

Meanwhile at the Sainsburys retail park, Its utter Chaos as the Xmas shoppers are reeking havoc, The dual cabbage way is blocked most of the day and shopping trollies are scraping the top of the exit doors and the ladies use google to find their car because they can't see over the trolly,

Now that is ridiculous, Tom. Why do people go overboard spending money on food like there's a global food shortage? I've never understood that, and I'll bet a pound to a penny that half of it will get chucked in the bin before New Year's Day, which is obscene when there are folk going hungry.

Hope that dual "cabbage" way thins out soon though.

A friday explanation,
The duel cabbage way come from an old joke,

What do you call two rows of cabbages.

and it fits the bill at Marus bridge because, the drivers have the same IQ as a cabbage,

Oh right! I thought it might have been predictive text. A friend of mine once texted me years ago and one of the words came out as cabbage. As she hadn't proof-read her message, she replied that she'd meant ..... something ..... which I can't remember now.

you are forgiven for thinking my inaccurate words are mistakes, they are mostly intentional like the time I told everyone that, I phoned the gov't about my tax being wrong and they said, " you need to talk to someone at the Dept of income tax and exercises " .

How many of those going overboard spending money on excessive amounts of food as well as drink will be the same people who keep claiming that they are in poverty and suffering hardship?

I think some shops are staying closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day so some people will be panic buying and will not know what to do without shops

Where Aldi had that store in Ashton is an awful place for a store, the traffic most days is jammed around there, and when you come out on to Bolton Road, it is not much better, so a move to that new location on Wigan Road I think is a very good idea, and I think that Farmfoods is crap

TTS have you ever used the junction of Wigan road Old Road Nicol Road it can take minutes to use this junction now there are according to Tomplum two entry/ exit's to the new Aldi which will cause even more problems

I called in there last night to get one or two things. I only noticed one entry/exit, that was directly onto Wigan Road. Mind you, I didn't look for another and it was dark!
Anyway, it was 9pm and it was busy.
I spoke to a girl I know who worked in the old one and now works there. She said, "look at all these people! and d'you know what? there's only a handful been in who I recognise as being old customers from the old shop, they're all new people! If they like Aldi so much, why didn't they come when we were down the road, 'cos we're only selling the same stuff"!
Which gives you something to ponder over .........

I don't think there is an exit from the store on to Nicol Road, and I am well aware that the junction you refer to on Wigan/Nicol Road, is a pain in the bottom to get through especially at busy times, such as when Cansfield High School is kicking out, but yes that store won't help the traffic situation at that junction.

Because the old store was in a stupid place

I'm wrong sorry,
I must have been suffering double vision or summut, There is only one entrance/exit, I checked while going past today, I'll have to put it down to a . senior moment coupled with too many stella and catching a wiff of weed at the bus stop,
I prayer for forgiveness and I hope my missguideation has not caused too much inconvenience

Traffic lights are being installed at the Aldi Wigan Road entrance/exit.

When I went to the new Aldi, I noticed that when I went to get out and turn left onto Wigan Road I couldn't see if any traffic was coming from the right, due to parked cars outside of the houses immediately to the right on Wigan Road. It is dangerous, especially during rush-hour.

If Sadiq Khan had been in charge Aldi wouldn't have been allowed to open until the new traffic lights were up and running

According to the local councillor the Aldi traffic lights will be switched on next week.

There are no lights for the entrance, The lights are 100 yards away from the entrance and they are a pedestrian crossing, They are ' not well thought out' because, A pedestrian coming out of the store and wanting to cross the busy road, has to walk 100yards towards Ashton and cross Nicol Road , then cross the road on the crossing to walk back the 100 yards and then cross Old road to get to the bus stop towards Bryn/Wigan , If the pedestrian wants to go the Ashton way, It is good, the bus stop is outside the store,

If they install traffic lights, Aldi like many of the builders of new housing estates will be more than likely financing it as the Council are not providing lights at places which are far more dangerous than the new store.

But like many other things in Wigan, what else can you expect when there are far too many not paying Council Tax!
