Protests
If it came to it in the future...as a pensioner you are one of the forgotten.,we can only protest like others have done in the past by protesting in numbers and causing disruption. Would you support any social uprising to protect your rights as a pensioner ? Violence of any description is not an option. ??

I am a pensioner, although I can only receive my state pension next year when I qualify at 66.
Ive never been aware of any pensioners "rights" ?
What are these" rights"? I would be very interested to know for future reference as it could benefit me.

Rights to claim your pension.
Free public transport.
Free prescriptions.
All sorts of discounts for oaps.
Errrrrrr. etc.
Replied: 4th Sep 2024 at 19:46
Oh right.
But are they "rights", or a goodwill gesture from the state that can be withdrawn at anytime at the discretion of a government, like the heating allowance?
Lets not forget free prescriptions were available to everyone at one time.
I know the state pension can't be withdrawn, obviously.

They can’t be “withdrawn”, but they can certainly be restricted, by means-testing!

My main grudge is that there are two levels of State Pension. If you are a man and born after April 1951 or a woman born after April 1953 you get a larger pension? How can this be right?? Do us older pensioners not need the same amount of money to live on???
We are one of the richest countries in the world yet we have one of the smallest State pensions in Europe.

Regarding a woman's pension, it does depend on what stamp is paid. A married woman can (or could) revert to married woman's tax and pay a cheaper stamp, but if she carries on working all her life and pays full stamp, then the pension is reasonable. If I'd reverted to the cheaper option and let my husband "keep me" when I got married I'd be at poverty level now, but that wasn't my choice.

I disagree with you, Tonker.
If you fail the means test, they can "withdraw" the winter fuel allowance from the recipient which has just been proved!
They can withdraw free TV licences and bus passes at any given point because they are not means tested.
So, yes. They can be withdrawn

We are ' soiled goods' we are of no use and a drain on resources and need the Struggling NHS more than the young, Stormer see's this and treats us according, There are lots of us but most of us just want a quiet life, Protests won't help us, they will only antagonise the other good people who want to get to our stage and hindering their earning will not help,
Its time to , drink that ' last of the Summer wine' and enjoy it while we can,

If government wanted, they could propose to withdraw state pension payments from those who have large private pensions and/or private incomes, ie: those who don’t need their state pension.
And, if they did, the Labour Party would let them!

Exactly, GoldenBear, Exactly.
Very well typed.
And you are a proper pensioner. Brought up in an era that had little or no benefits. Your parents and grandparents had to manage, and they did
Replied: 5th Sep 2024 at 15:57

Eggbeater.
Mobile phones and computers were not invented then.
I'm curious to know what mobile phones and computers have to do with pensioners rights?
Is there any chance that you can correlate the two?
Replied: 5th Sep 2024 at 16:30
The correlations is if YOU want folk to live in the past I suggest you do the same we didn't have all these things in the 50s and 60s so why dont you give them all up and if you are a pensioner are you willing to live off the same amount of money the pensioners were living off back then? I await you answer and if now why not? seeing as your praising them for living at a time of icy windows

Health problems allowing I would definitely take part in any peaceful protests against pensioners benefits being withdrawn by Government.
Have Age UK not asked already if people would be willing to participate in peaceful protests? Their petition against the withdrawing of the Winter Fuel Allowance has almost reached 500,000 signatures and I would encourage everyone to sign it!

Eggbeater.
They had no heating allowance, free bus / train pass, etc. But they managed!
What has that got to do with pensioners rights?
Nobody receiving benefits / heating allowance / free bus pass etc has rights. They can be removed or reduced at anytime at any governments discretion.
I hope that answers your query
