Northern Lights

Started by: tonker (28112)

I got a message, 20 past 11, off my son in Hitchin.
He said they could see the Northern Lights from there, looking to the north.
I went out the back to look, but saw nothing to the north.
Anyroadup, when I turned to come back in, I noticed something directly above, but a bit to the south. It looked like a raincloud but , after a few minutes, it turned purple, ish. So I took it's picture.
Not that spectacular, really.
Then my lad sent a picture he'd took, from his smallholding in Hitchin, looking north!

Could see it from Newtown about 11.10 looking West. Who needs to go to Iceland?

I like shopping in Iceland It is not often that the "Northern lights" are visible so far south in this country

I have seen the Northern Lights before, in the late 1980s whilst on 'special ops' on Svalbard, and quite a sight they were too, and again I saw them in Worsley Mesnes circa 1991, last night I looked out of the window around midnight, and the sky had purple sheen to it, but in the adjacent properties which face north, I could see a green reflection in their windows, I couldn't be arsed going outside though.

Tonker, those are beautiful photos. Thank you.

Tommy, it must be wonderful to see them from a more northerly point.

I just nipped to my local Tesco Express and got chatting to three people. One chap showed me some of his photos of the Northern Lights on his phone; a lady serving me said that her boyfriend had gone up to Parbold Hill last night, and the man in the queue behind me said he was going up Rivington tonight. I bet the views from there are terrific.
