ST JOHN THE DEVINE CHURCH, PEMBERTON, WIGAN
St Johns, Pem might soon be no more...been told it is on the possible closure list. This will be a disaster for Pemberton. It will quickly fall into disrepair and become an eyesore. I got married there, kids christened there and now hubby, two grandsons and sister and brother in law in there plus others of course and where I hope to be when its time. Unless the church can prove itself more useful in the community quite soon, its a done deal. Only just had one of the huge beautiful stained glass windows replaced in 2019 too. Very sad and probably not many Pembertonians know/Building started in 1830, so not that far off 200 yr old. We could do with trying to help save it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John_the_Divine%27s_Church,_Pemberton

Last year there was a list posted of a few local churches which were proposed for closure including Holy Trinity Church at Downall Green were my wife had just been buried. The graveyard is very overgrown now and volunteers try their best to clear some of it but if the chuch did shut with in a few years you would not get into the graveyard

What else can you expect when people no longer go to church to worship or even go for births, weddings and funerals any more.

Christianism is a dying religion in this country I’m afraid

stop moaning about mosques. get to your local church and support your Christian community if it bothers you. Mosques are well attended and that's why they thrive. churches can't stay open for the decoration

What about the graves there. Are they going to move them?

If you want to save the church then start turning up for services. A church can't stay open because it has special memories for people. if it had a decent congregation then it would not now be under threat

I agree with you Kath.
It has memories for me. My grandparents and uncle attended the church and are buried there. My very elderly mother has told me that she wants to be buried there. It's a nice church and sad that many so called Christians don't attend a church but for other faiths, attending their place of worship is a lifestyle.
