Just before anyone says pie eaters that isn't true. Wigan miners didn't return to work until their union said so. I'm almost certain it was the Notts miners who broke first to form their own union but I will have to look that up.

I thought that the Pie Eating thing came from the 1926 strike.

TTS how do we know that the people on the photo are miners? I can see at least five or six women and my dad used to tell me that lots of people used to gather in the market place.

I think the term humble pie was given to striking miners returning to work. Im sure this was uncalled for against a proud workforce like the Miners !

That was done in the General Strike of 1926.

In the 1926 general strike, it was Nottingham miners who turned their backs on the union and returned to work. Then they formed their own union.
There weren't enough miners in Wigan to affect the rest of the country.

If there's any truth in the 'pie eater theory', it'll probably refer to local action in the south Lancashire coalfield. The name was probably given to miners from the Wigan area pits by the men from the Manchester, Bolton and Leigh areas.

No Tommy it isn't off the track. I've looked it up and it carries on that way to a terminus box near the toilets and down Market Street.
