Skylines

Started by: dustaf (inactive)

Was thinking about the skyline of our marvellous town the other day, whilst musing over lavs in tower blocks.

I know we are, as Tonker will tell us, in a valley, but I think we still have a much more interesting skyline of sorts than Leigh, or Chorley.

Thing is, can a place be too cluttered. Such as London and other places full of very tall buildings?

There are other company logos like that ^^^, if logo is the right word.

I think there may be one in silhouette form for Lancaster and something similar for Liverpool.

If memory serves, there may even have been one for Wigan years ago featuring the Parish Church and the cooling towers.

EDIT

Liverpool

I think a few radio stations may have used similar as logos.

I knew I was asking for bother.

I think from the south, Butts mill looks really nice in the sunshine.

Especially that lovely green dome

Oops, wrong pic.

The photo of 1950's Leigh is great, Dostaf.

I haven't found a Wigan skyline in silhouette form, but some are depicted in artworks:

JL Isherwood's - Wigan Skyline and other paintings

Eyre Crowe's - The Dinner Hour - Wigan

And I've just been perusing some of great photos on WW:

WW Album - Skyline

Westwood Skyline

Wigan Skyline from Ince Rabbit Rocks 1989

Wigan Skylinefrom a colliery slag heap near Pemberton Junction 1968

Great finds, Jo Anne.

I'd almost forgot about the impact of the tall flats (now gone) at Worsley Mesnes.

You'd be surprised what's on the Wigan skyline! ........

"IT TOOK just seconds to wipe decades of industrial history from the Wigan skyline.
The two huge towers of Parkside Colliery disappeared from the landscape for ever."

Whatever will they think of next?

That Themes TV logo... you do know it is not really that cluttered, that view is a Photoshop (or 70's equivalent) collage. That view does not exist.

I find it odd they put St Paul's near the Westminster clock tower... and leave out Westminster Abbey, which IS next to the clock tower.

Now he tells me.

Another illusion of that there London shattered.

I remember at one time thinking the Post Office Tower had suddenly appeared on the pic.

Must just have been me not having noticed it sooner.

Dustaf great pic of Leigh. I spent many an hour drinking there in my college days.

It always seemed somewhat strange to see a pit head gear practically in the town centre of Leigh.

Now I don't think there's much of note on the skyline.
