118 Standishgate
The old building on Standishgate has finally given up!
It collapsed in the early hours of this morning. Standishgate has been closed to traffic and pedestrians from the Royal Oak to the School car park.
Some pics...

Bloody kids these days eh.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 09:42

There was an earthquake in North Wales last night, which was reported to have been felt in Southport, so I wonder if that as caused the collapse and I am sure that the entry at the side of that building, which is now filled with wubble is the entrance to Actons Garage.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:00

118 Standishgate,,,, is that not next door going down, to where there was a brothel, which was raided by the police and closed down, a few months ago
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:04
Brothel was a bit further down. The entrance in the photo blocked by rubble is the entrance to Acton Garage.
Not sure what extent of damage done to shop(s) yet but there is some damage.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:15

Wasn't this the place we we discussing on the Standishgate album last month?
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:23

This Brian fellow that's put the photo's on here should learn how to upload photo's to the sit or ask someone for help in doing it

Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:40

Sir bob,yes it is Acton's Garage..that's where we always go,he's going to lose business as there's no other entrance for cars.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 10:50

Its full of birds not surprised its collapsed .
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 11:29

Brothel eh...How much was it to go in, Brian?
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 11:32

There is another entrance to Acton Garage...off Upper Dicconson St...turn into Acton Terrace

18th century building with hand made bricks.... You will soon have the SALVAGE MEN around. They will probably demolish it for nothing provided they can take away everything.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 11:43
I can remember going to a studio 51 or 71 something like that for a massage and sauna in Upper Dicconson St in the seventies, but I can't remember where it was, does anyone remember it?
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 12:17
I remember going to Upper Diccinson and having a body wrap lost inches until I had my first coffee. I think it was something to do with Louis Fishers
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 12:50

Trouble is Nana Jacqui..they can't get cars from down there up to the garage for repairs.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 13:00

wizzerwin
It was Studio71 and it was on the corner of Dicconson Terrace and Upper Dicconson Street, last time I looked there, it had become a undertakers.

Just checked the building on the Save Wigan Campaign. Really a shame it couldn't be saved. Not through lack of trying.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 14:34
Shame on you Mac, you concentrace on your motor bike.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 15:34

The facade might be able to be retained. I wonder if the building was insured?

The following from a survey done by Save Wigan and brought to the attention of Wigan Council. Unfortunately the council can't afford legal notices on the owners. The owner should be delighted it's gone so he can build from a blank canvas.
No. 118 Standishgate –
Viewed from opposite, the left chimney stack sloping noticeably to the right and may be an early indicator of structural instability, since the appearance of the building directly below is a cause for serious concern. The gable end has bowed outwards at a height of 4 metres to approximately 45 centimetres. A crack in the brickwork runs from floor level up to a window in the gable end. Given the daily vehicular access to Acton Garage at the rear along the cobbled alley, there must be a reasonable probability of constant vibrations effecting more building damage with a possibility of catastrophic collapse! Due to the proximity of this building to St Mary’s and St John’s Primary School and the heavy traffic flow in front of and around the structure, in order to avoid any fatalities through building collapse, it is strongly recommended that Wigan Council investigate the structural integrity of this Grade 2 Listed building and preferably enforce works to support the building as a matter of great urgency!
There is evidence of the stonework eroding on the front of the building just above floor level and moss/grass growth at gutter level which may cause brickwork damage. At the rear there are window apertures open and large flocks of pigeons nesting internally.
Survey as at 27/12/11.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 17:12

Disgraceful that a building should collapse when the council knew it was in such a disgraceful condition and a danger to the general public!
Shame on them
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 17:34

Council should be sued for negligence, and the owner for similar.

With local owners called M & A Management, Swinley.
Replied: 29th May 2013 at 17:47

Me and Granada were having a swift one in the Royal Oak just before midnight when it came crashing down.
A rank and file Wigan Parish church activist who witnessed the collapse came in breathless, alarmed and seemingly in a mild state of shock with the first report.
Not wishing to miss last orders though, we didn't bother going to look.

Just thankful that it did come down late evening and most likely due to the strong wind that was blowing at the time, with it being half term children could well have been playing or folks walking along the alley during the day time.

i remember when I was at the High School in the 60s that house on the right [still standing was rumoured to be a brothel. when walking down the hill at home time we'd try and catch someone going in although I'm not sure i knew what a brothel was!

Back to 118 Standishgate - Who are M and A Management?
Replied: 30th May 2013 at 09:58
M and A Management are a letting, rental agents etc. They also have several care homes and own quite a lot of properties.
Replied: 30th May 2013 at 15:25

M&A is owned by Mohammed Hussain. I've known him since the 80's and have done quite a lot of work for him on his properties. He used to have a sewing place at Eckersleys Mill, M&A Fashions.
I reckon he's about £3.20 in front of Whelan!

I am sure the building was used as offices in the seventies. I am quite sure I delivered an evening paper to that building when I was a kid.
Those offices may have been connected to the car sales company which was next door.
Replied: 30th May 2013 at 22:33

It is a shame that we lost this building.
Replied: 30th May 2013 at 22:34

When did they widen the alleyway?
If my memory serves me right! In my early years, the first part of the alleyway was only wide enough for a person to walk down. After about ten metres the alleyway became a dirt road, which was used as an access route for the garages which were on your right as you walked through to Acton Terrace. The only entrance for a car was in Acton Terrace.
Replied: 30th May 2013 at 22:47

Gareth, 'we' haven't lost anything. And, by the way, the owner lives in YOUR ward!

It is not the first building and it certainly will not be the last building for Wigan to lose.
To maintain Wigan's architecture and heritage certain laws need to be reviewed.

Its like what pisolivadi said.
We didn't bat an eyelid when we heard the commotion. Last orders were our priority
But after looking at Brians photos it was a tad serious.
Luckily, no one got injured.
If that would have happened in the daytime, there could have been casualties.

ianp, the narrow alleyway you're thinking of will be the Little London alley which is further down.
Replied: 2nd Jun 2013 at 14:26
Did the premises have a spell as a toy shop or something similar in the not too distant past?
Replied: 3rd Jun 2013 at 19:37

Thanks! Ayrefield. Cannot clearly remember the alleyway being so wide. Cycled and walked up and down the alleyway hundreds of times.
Remember, the car company building was about fifteen metres further back from the road and had a wall at the front which was over one metre high, because the ground which the building stood on was higher than the road.
The shop lower down was an antiques shop. I think, the shop had previously been a music shop.

How long before the Old Town Hall on Rodney Street goes the same way?
Parts of the back of the building which were the interior walls into the old courtrooms have begun to collapse there as well.
Replied: 4th Jun 2013 at 12:03

NZW, join Save Wigan and get more info, can even come to meetings.
Replied: 4th Jun 2013 at 12:08
With regard to the survey predicting a collapse, at least the garage owner will have a cast iron case to sue for loss of business.
Replied: 4th Jun 2013 at 12:16
NZW I walked past the old town hall last week, very sad to see it in that state.
Replied: 4th Jun 2013 at 12:27

The owners of the Old Town Hall have tried to get it sorted but the Council do not want to play ball.
In a nut shell the owners say the back of the building has gone past the state of saving but they want to save front age and get rid of the back bit. The Council say no they want them to try and save the back bit too. Result stall mate and before to long we won't have anything to save. If they could save the frontage it would be better than nothing. I have been in the property with the owner and the old staircase was gone, not sure why I walked up them and look round upstairs .
I wish the Council would use some common senses and let them get rid of back bit, as it has gone anyway, and save the frontage.
Replied: 4th Jun 2013 at 13:00

Hi jack bit, there was a toy shop but it was a bit further up Wigan Lane towards Mabs Cross. I think it was called Magpies.
There are some photos of inside the town hall here, taken in 2010.

Headline
"Historic properties the responsibility of owners."
No comment from the owner
No comment from the Council
Another fine example of the poor quality of journalism.
......basically a letter from a concerned resident.
