Lizzie,I would love to have a go at sculpting..but never know where to get the correct clay, providing it's not expensive..it must be wonderful to look at a bust of someone and know that you've done it,I just enjoy anything to do with using my hands, have knitted a lot but realised it didn't grow quick enough for me so started crocheting, and loved that..babies pram covers, babies shawls etc..have painted on China plates..would love to have a go at watercolour painting..but am probably not good enough..you know the saying Jack of all trades, master of none.

Loved doing watercolour painting at school....my Dad painted in watercolours and he never had a lesson in his life......I remember a blue wash and a light brown wash, both taking half the area of the paper then building my picture....anything went...little farm house, trees, clouds, the odd smudge that looked like a bird.....Watercolour painting is so forgiving there are no rigid rules in my book....paint what you feel...then it is completely your work.....

Lizzie..I've made my mind up,am definitely going to have a go at watercolour painting..being honest,I absolutely love painting in oils..but somehow watercolours always look prettier to me..we have a store in Wigan,in fact it's the only one now that deals in arts and crafts,I get all my materials there..even the frames,I stood looking at watercolour pads last week and wondered if I'd be any good..I've got the paints already, can't remember when or where I got those..so am definitely going to give it a bash..and I love this thread Lizzie.

I keep meanin g to get back into my art. i stocked up when I retired. i love landscapes and seascapes. we went to see Timmy Mallet's exhibition recently and was pleasantly surprised. I also like Rolf Harris but not so sure now ...
i'm not keen on boaty paintings which you get a lot of down here.Jack Vettriano I like [similar to the lady in the chair above and Robert lenkiewicz i love. I have a limited edition print but can't afford an original.
Replied: 22nd May 2013 at 15:02
Kath,I wish I could paint like Rolf Harris..he's a natural..but am going to have a Google at those artists you just...Kath,just had a look..both excellent, but boy oh boy..I thought Vettriano was a bit risque,he can't hold a candle to Robert can he...nevertheless,brilliant artists.

Replied: 22nd May 2013 at 17:02
Glad that you've started an 'arts' thread, only just noticed it.
Lizzie your dad was obvously a 'natural' painter, lovely work, I'm sure you've inherited his artistic talent.
Momac glad you've got to show your portraits on this thread - brill....and yes go for the watercolouring!!!. My wife loves the medium. Different technique, she tells me. You go from light colours first & then add darker colours, and there isn't the same scope for correcting as with oils which you can always overpaint.......but go for it.
All this talk of art etc reminds me that I too did watercolour art classes and life study classes ie 'nude' drawing..........in my twenties. Who knows.
Replied: 22nd May 2013 at 17:46
i did nude too. i did a foudation course at Wigan tech. c 1968. daft that I am i dropped out....
Replied: 22nd May 2013 at 19:05
Many years ago I also painted a nude..I'd just finished varnishing it when our landlady at the time called and asked if she could buy it..she was the most prudish lady you could find..I've often wondered what her husband said when she took it home.

Aw Kath. This is one of those 'if only' situations isn't it.
Was it your intention to have a career in art?. I think there must be millions of amateur artists who get real pleasure from their hobby but very few people can make it pay.
I am intrigued by this Robert Lenkiewicz. Tell me more.

raymyjamie - lenkiewicz was a Londoner but settled on Plymouth's Barbican. he was always a controversial character. he once did a project on mental handicap and painted kids at the school where i worked [before I was there]. he had parental permission but staff after were appalled that he painted what he say and not "Pretty" pictures. he's famous for his project on vagrancy too especially one guy who lived in an old barrel in a local park.when Diogenese died Lenkiewicz had the corpse enbalmed and kept it but no-one knew where it was.

Replied: 23rd May 2013 at 12:30
Lizzie I love the painting of the Rainbow Lorikeet, has your daughter done any more?
I am more of a crafty person than art. I also make my own cards and recycle stuff. I am very lucky and have my own craft room. People give me stuff they would otherwise throw away and I revamp it. It makes for an 'individualised' house.
I used to go to Haigh Stables on Sturday morning to the pottery class and occasionally to the art class.

Just in case anyone is interested..... last week I went to Heskin Hall to a cardmaking class. A lovely lady called Jean Robinson has a card stall at Heskin Hall and she provides workshops to suit your individual requirements. This was a one to one workshop. I paid £12 for 2 hours and came away with 3 completed cards ... the price included a cup of coffee too. It was really enjoyable. Don't know how she makes any money at that price.
Thanks for the welcome Lizzie.
