Wigan Genealogy

I am researching the Sutton side of my family in the Wigan area. Thomas Milner (born in Grimsby in 18128) was a watch maker and traded in Wigan from around 1840 to 1888. He married Margaret Molyneux, daughter of Zachariah, a shopkeeper, in Wigan in 1844. Thomas and Margaret's daughter, Mary, married John Frederick Varty - who was landlord of the White Lion Inn in Wallgate around 1870. Their daughter, Margaret Eleanor Newby Varty, married John Sutton in Wigan in 1887. Any further info, photos etc., would be gratefully received. George Esplin (born Manchester in 1819) was a Wigan watchmaker and had a shop called 'The Illuminated Clock' in Wallgate from about 1840 till his death in 1854. The shop was then taken over by Royle and Rawson. I believe George was Thomas Esplin's cousin - George was illegitimate and was born in Manchester to Elizabeth Milner in 1819. Elizabeth Milner married William Barton in Manchester in 1830. By 1838, Elizabeth Barton and her son George Esplin were in partnership in Wallgate, a partnership that was dissolved in 1841. My research so far suggests that George Esplin and Thomas Milner's parents, Elizabeth and William Milner, were very possibly siblings. I believe this because, although William Milner and family were in Ireland in the 1830's and 40's (he was a coastguard), Thomas (a watch maker) and his sister Maria (a female servant) were living in Wigan with Elizabeth Barton and son George Esplin. It seems likely that Thomas had gone to live with his aunt to serve a watchmaker's apprenticeship, rather than face the hardships that were present in Ireland at that time. Maria Newby Ablett née Milner, born in Scarborough in 1824, was Thomas's brother and living with him in Wigan in the 1841 census. She married Charles Ablett in Ireland in 1848 (both their fathers were coastguards and worked together in Ireland) and the couple moved to Wigan in about 1852. Samuel Newby Milner, born in Sizewell, Suffolk, in 1831, was Thomas and Maria Newby's younger brother. He married Elizabeth Parry in Wigan in 1856.
