Wigan Genealogy

When in the UK in the late 1950's I decided to isit Wigan to look at the carved pews in a church there. One of my Westhoughton uncles said "Don't tell anyone your mother's maiden name was Ainscough! You'll find yourself related to everyone in the town!" Is that right? Were there so many My mother was Harriet Ainscough and she had 1 brother and 6 sisters.
