Notes / Message
WILLIAM POMFRET (1831?-?): William Pomfret appears in the 1881 Census of England as "Head" of the Household. At that time he lived at 26 Manchester Road, Ince-In-Makerfield, Lancashire, England, together with his wife, Margaret and seven unmarried children. He was a Colliery Engine Winder. A Colliery Engine Winder was the man who worked the engine around which was the "rope" connected to the "chair/cage" by which men and materials were lowered into/brought out of the mine. He married Margaret M. Thompson (1833?-?) WILLIAM POMFRET (1855?-after 1901) married Mary Alice Hilton (1854?-28 Sept 1903). According to the 1881 Census of England, William Pomfret lived at 7 Hey Street in Wigan, Lancashire, England. He was an Engine Tenter, born in Ince, Lancashire. He continued to live at 7 Hey Street in a flat of two rooms. During this time he was employed as a Stationary Engine Driver. It's interesting to note that on this census form, William listed himself as born in Wigan, not Ince. According to the 1901 Census of Wigan, William lived at 21 Hey Street, right next door to his daughter Annie Pomfret and her husband Stephen Gorman. ANNIE POMFRET (20 Jul 1877-18 Feb 1965): According to the 1901 Census of Wigan, William lived at 21 Hey Street, right next door to his daughter Annie Pomfret and her husband Stephen Gorman. ANNIE POMFRET (20 JUL 1877-18 Feb 1965): Annie Pomfret emigrated to Providence, RI, USA in 1906 following her husband the year before. She brought her children, Stephen, Harold and William. She also brought her brother and sister, Beatrice Pomfret and William Pomfret.
