I always thought that Wigan`s papers were a bit cack, and that the news stories were a bit sparse and desperate. For this reason, I was so surprised to see how protective they are of their "information" in the letter that they sent to you. How can The Wigan Evening Post have the word evening in it when you can get hold of one at lunch time?? The news is obviously going to be stale if you`re reading yesterday`s stories!!

	why is a wigan paper full of preston ads and news(?), its contact numbers have a preston code which some people dont realise. The news (?) is the same as the morning papers and the local stuff is either mundane,inacurate or heavily biased. Pesonally I don't buy any of them unfortunatly the wife does and the price is a rip off compared to the nationals.

The Observer, once a massive broadsheet, is a shadow of its former self; and as for the evening paper - well, compared to the old Post and Chronicle it's not an evening paper is it? The reporter is decent paper, its free,its delivered free, OK it has plenty car ads. Have a good look at the dailys,they have plenty ads and they aren,t free. Must admit, I,ve had plenty of smiles reading the spelling of the classified ads. You would think they would employ someone on the end of ads phone who can spell. No don,t bother,I get the drift of the ads and I also get a smile! it,s free because the advertisments cover the cost and there,s probally a few Quid left. Nobody gives you something for nothing,you don,t have to read the ads, just enjoy, and when you,ve finished reading it, cut into 6inch square pieces, stick on a nail in your loo, presto! Free bog rolls! No sruggling to find the the first sheet of tissue when your in a hurry.

	They charge 5p to put one leaflet in that paper and on average theres about 8 of them in every paper. Theat's 40 pence for spam. They just make too much money and don't care how they make it.

	I come home to Abram every weekend to collect a local paper (Observer)& Geofery Shyrane took my wedding photos in 1984 and is still contributing to the papers.I dont care for the sports pages i want to read the news .

	Wigan Athletic are a PREMIER LEAGUE football club now, yet the coverage is almost the same as when we were in the 3rd Division. Don't tell me that all Wigan's publications aren't biased towards Rugby, because I know they are! It's time the publishers wised up, Latics play the NATIONAL SPORT and is getting far bigger crowds than WRLFC.

	I think that the Wigan Evening Post should be called the Preston Evening Post because most of the jobs advertised in there are located in Preston and Blackpool and why are they still going on about "The Warriors" when the rugby season is over. If you want to read about Latics you have to read the national papers.

	All local papers seem to be bland rubbish. Probably because they're owned by the same company. To make them better they should scrap ALL sports pages. We don't ALL like mindless rugby or football. In reply to Dave from Bolton...God help us if he thinks Wigans a dump. I went to Bolton today and it looks like a third world nation. Dirty, smelly, squalid place.

	This is to Lyndsey, I am not a wiganer, but still love reading the Wigan Reporter. I love the page, where people write in to reply to other peoples letters, the arguments are great. If your talking about good English, then it should be "them" not "em".

Wigan's like any place with a press monopoly, the publisher can totally manipulate how it presents the news. The Post is effectively the Wigan edition of the LEP, and is presented that way to reduce costs. The Reporter is starved of editorial content and is poorly distributed because the publisher wants people to go out and buy the Observer. The publisher maximises profits and what the customer wants really doesn't matter.

	We keep reading in the Wigan Evening Post to cancel your papers if you go on holiday I try to cancel my deliveries of the siad paper but they delivered 12 copies whilst I was away and now they are demanding payment for them they no chance,what a paper named Wigan Evening News you can get it at 11,oclock in the morning, just laughable

Is it really true that the Reporter is not delivered on council estates? If this is true why can't places like Beech Hill, Marsh Green etc. have a good supply at their newspaper shops. The Reporter is better that the others with news of entertainments and local car boots etc.! The Observer is getting thinner and so to is the "Post". The Ob.at more than most nationals and the WEP as dear as some of them.

	I think the Wigan Observer is the only decent paper in the town, particularly the sports section - well laid out and a good, even coverage of both Latics and the Warriors. It puts the Post and its horrific jagged cut-outs to shame.

	Hows about the Wigan Courier! Free, Full Colour, Only good news and independant of the Reporter, Observer and Post who print the same boring editorial content in each publication. Is expanding each year, currently at 33,000 homes throughout the Wigan area, so coming to a home near you soon!

	The WEP is edited in Preston and printed in Preston. The WEP editor is answerable to the LEP editor in Preston, what he says goes. The paper is treated in Preston as an afterthought. Two of the columnists featured in the WEP do not work in the Wigan office. The paper is getting noticeably thinner and is often badly printed with lots of spelling mistakes.

What has happened to the Reporter delivery service. It is now Sunday 4pm and just had the paper delivered! This has been happening for several months now - unless of course we don't receive it at all. In fact I can count on one hand how many times we have received the paper this year- in fact I can count on one hand how many times we have received the paper this year which of course means the news/bargains are out of date. 	I live on the Wain Homes est near the Heinz factory. We've not had delivery of the Reporter for 12 months plus. I've rang the newspaper office many times to no avail. If I was a paying advertiser I'd not be happy with the circulation numbers. I dont believe its being read by a third of what they state.

As publisher of the Wigan Courier I have read the comments on this page with great interest and appreciate everyone's point of view. The latest circulation figures show that the Wigan Evening Post has plunged again by 6.2% July to December 2007 compared to 2007 - it now sells 8,761 copies a night as opposed to 9,355 a year previously. The Wigan Observer is down to 17,181 copies, and the Reporter, amazingly given it is a free newspaper, now only circulates 61,277 copies as opposed to 61,751, a far cry from the 70,000 plus circulation it had before the paper was withdrawn some time ago from the likes of Aspull and Wrightington to make the owners even more money. The comments about the Reporter reflect the fact that it is 83 per cent advertising and only 17 per cent editorial material, and that figure will only decrease in the future as Johnston Press seeks to squeeze even more money out of their regional newspaper operation in Wigan. If the people of Wigan really want a good newspaper they should buy it in numbers, only then will any company be able to pay good jounalists to seek out local news. Wiganers have had the opportunity for yfears with the Wigan Observer to have a good quality weekly paper, but if you dont support it with advertising and by buy it you will never have what you are wanting. The free papers have come and gone and they are only interested in revenue and for years the repoerter claimed 70000 circulation when the printers of it knew they only printed 59,000 copies.

	Observer only quality newspaper, but unfortunately local charities and car boots advertise in the (free) Wigan Reporter and because we don't get this delivered any more where I am I never know when they're on. Advertisers take note please!

Is it me? Has anyone read Geoffs input this week? He states "we've had it too good for too long, now its time to pay the price". Who's he talking about? "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". At the risk of sounding a bit off Geoff, I've worked all my life, and worked damned hard, but when it comes to being preached at I take exception. I'm now in the process of being registered disabled at the age of 53, after working for almost 40 years, money is tight, and not for the first time, and I've had to have help filling in forms, because I dont know the system inside out. I've never had to, because I've worked for what I've had. My parents were the same, god rest 'em, and when my mum was ill, and we asked for a bit of home help because my dad was exhausted and we all had to work and couldnt be there 24/7 the comment was, "but you have two daughters, why do you need help?" Not once did they mention our brother, who was tying himself in knots trying to help us all! My husband and son are now going through what we went through as a family and its heartbreaking to watch. I hate needing help, but to be fair, if I paid any other organisation who promised me help, and I didnt get it, I would be able to take them to task. There would probably be a tv advert "paid in thousands, getting nowt back? Phone this number and we'll have have a cheque in the post. No win, no fee"!!. I've worked for nearly 40 years, and paid my dues. Is it only those who's country it is who are being taken to task Geoff, or should I ask the grinning idiot Blair what he's done with the cash? Always assuming he would have time to tell anyone? Where is he now? Grafting or travelling? Because I know for a fact that if parents from other countries work here, they get family allowance sent to their place of birth for their children, even though the children have never set foot in this country, and the parents have just started paying National Insurance!!! My brother and sister, my husband, and now my son have paid in what amounts to a small fortune over the years, my sister is 66, imagine what we could do with that. Could we have a bit back please? I think Geoffs comments were ill thought out, condesending, and an insult to those who are out here doing it, and not sat at a screen trying to think of something to comment upon, especially when they have had constant, assured employment for the last, how many years is it now Goeff? I could always be wrong, or just insulted.

	mostly terrible, waste of trees. Wigan Reporter (when it even comes) is jampacked with adverts and not much else. Wigan Evening post may as well be renamed "Preston Evening Post" as all the jobs/houses/classifieds are Preston based. :S

I am old enough to remember when the Wigan Observer was a broadsheet newspaper with a circulation of almost 50,000 copies a week, one of the biggest in the country for a 'paid for' local weekly newspaper. The problem I think from a readers point of view is we have three very similar newspapers in a small town, with the same reporters from the same group, so we all get the same news stories just written a little differently with different photo angles. When United Newspapers then the parent company of the Wigan Observer took on board the Wigan Reporter it almost killed off the Observer because it lost the car dealers and estate agents as well as many other advertisers, this would be around the late 70s-80s and for me the Observer has never recovered, sadly. Before that time, the Wigan Observer was a very powerful newspaper and no other paper could touch or match it. The Reporter started life in StHelens and wanted to invade Wigan with it's publication so United News really had to buy it. The Evening Post as always been a nothing paper' a paper started life in Fishergate Preston. The only true Wigan paper is the Observer, first printed in Rowbottom Square in 1853. To sell newspapers the front page must catch the eye and please the eye and most importantly be different from the rest.

Less of the paper talk ive lived in wigan for 13 years now originally from the mighty st helens wup wup.wup ive gotta say each.christmas in wigan town centre is gettin worse u goto da helens n its all.lit up makes u feel christmassy cum to wigan.ooohh nothing I pay ma council tax so come on wigan council brighten the place up only once a year put a bit off effort into it coz its a depressing town to.come to at christmas if u made people who come to the town feel christmassy they might spend there money would b good for the local economy makes sense but for now my money is gettin spent in st helens n liverpool

I am just wondering if the free wigan reporter newspaper is still going? Our area (upholland Road and Poet's estate) have not recieved a copy for over 18 months. St Helens is stll going and I can receive one from them every wednesday if I travelled into town. So, what's the problem? To my mind, the advertising revenue should more than compensate the costs in its printing and distribution! More importantly if its still going your marketing department must be bereft in ideas to attract suitable deliverers as well as short changing local businesses and denying jobs to a few people that need the extra cash.

	Terry, yes the Wigan Reporter's still going but doesn't deliver to the WN5-7 postcode sector any more, so the whole of Billinge and all of Orrell south of the railway line don't get a copy. Mind you, I live north of the railway line at Orrell and I've never had a copy either - or the couier for that matter. The Reporter also doesn't now deliver to WN8-0 area, which is Up Holland.
