Have your sayWigan Lane Bus Lane?

A new bus lane has been planned, running south from the Boar's Head to Woodfield School. What are your views?

David Hurst from Wigan says...
why ?...... The residents don't want it, motorist's don't want it, who does want it ?. The only outcome of this scheme will be to make life even more difficult for Wigan motorist's who are sick and fed up with unwanted and unwarranted hair brained road schemes that we have to put up with. By the way, how much is this costing Wigan rate payers ? a LOT OF MONEY i GUESS

David Hotchkiss from Wigan says...
The bus lanes at the new Saddle Junction are not used by the bus drivers, what is the point of more that will not be used......But if it is not this that Wigan Metro will be wasting OUR money on, it would be something else. If Wigan Metro want to speed up traffic flow, remove 75% of the traffic lights around Wigan, it may sound a stupid idea....but think about it. Mother nature keeps rivers flowing, not stopping the flow every 100 yards.

Marie from Westhoughton says...
Bus lanes would be great if people could be persuaded to use the buses. Are the council thick or what! We have no park and ride scheme. I personally could not get to work in time on a bus due to poor timetables etc. In my experience, in Bolton, many bus lanes, merely serve to confuse the poor motorist even more.

John Dickinson from Wigan says...
This is yet another example of the local council pampering to the whims of their government colleagues. No thought whatsoever for the people who use the road. It is acts of stupidity like this that enable the council to achieve targets set by Whitehall and make 'Smiths into Lords'.

Sarah Robinson from Wigan says...
Perhaps Wigan Council could look at Bolton. Safety has been considerably improved on busy commuter routes by the introduction of cycle lanes and refuges for pedestrians in residential areas. This has had a traffic calming effect with the added bonus of less congestion and shorter journey times during busy times of the working day.

Val from Wigan says...
Why are taxis not allowed to use the bus lanes along Crompton St and Mesnes St in the evenings. Getting from one side of town to the other is a joke. Not to mention the extra cost. Our one way system is certainly unique!!

gil. bolton from Wigan says...
Wigan Council should first make the exit from the Infirmary safer, yesterday a serious accident happened, it is a terrible place to get out of, I am suprised more accidents have not occured. Money appears to be spent on the wrong things, road safety should be the first priority. What happened to the park and ride from the town centre to the hospital, another no-no.

Mick from Standish says...
Get the Standish ring road built and there would be no need for these hair-brained, money wasting schemes.

Alan Earith from Atherton says...
One way system ,all the traffic lights are on red together hence the traffic backed up at peak times up to four lane ends remember this when the councilors are up for re election.Pedestrian zone cars still pouring through Market st.won't be long before some one is killed where are the police?

Mick from Wigan says...
Can our councillors not find anything else to waste our council taxes on? I agree with last but one letter Newtown has one, and I have never seen a bus anywhere in it. lets see some money pumped back into our communities, ie: help getting the youths off the streets and away from the dealers, by putting some youth clubs and the such like back in place around some of our troubled estates.

Jim from Newtown Wigan says...
If the bus lane near the fire station Newtown was changed for all traffic going down Robin park road the traffic in Newtown would ease as most of the traffic coming down Ormskirk Rd and Warrington Rd at weekends are heading for the JJB Stadium or Robin Park Retail Park and the bus lanes in each direction never see a bus they just gather dust and rubbish to add to Newtown's distress

Ben from Wigan says...
the bus lane is a bad idea busses shuld be on the mane road to save space fof life saving transport.

Jim from Wigan says...
Totally agree with Jim from Newtown.

Jim from Wigan says...
Bring the cost of bus travel down. Give us a real timetable for buses. Stick to it. More people will then use the bus. Less cars on the road. No need for bus lanes. Put money into better public services.

Jack from Haigh says...
No one wants it !
No one likes it !
Everyone thinks it has increased the risk of accidents dramatically!
Is there one good reason for it being there ?

Alan Baldwin from Wigan says...
Newtown bus lane is a total waste of space, busses don't used the lane! and all you councillors can get off your bum and get down there and WATCH! and see how many busses used the lane!
"God help you all if you has a brain".

Alan from Atherton says...
Why can't the people on community service be put on salting the pavements in the inclement weather let the people see they are putting something back into the community and it wont cost the rate payers anything for the job the council should be doing anyway

John from Wigan says...
Yet another bus lane has appeared, in Pottery Rd, this one is just asking to be abused, can forsee many accidents caused by this one.

Bri from Wigan says...
As if Pottery Rd doesnt get congested enough during peak times the council decides to make it worse with a bus lane without tackling the REAL problem of the RAILWAY BRIDGE. We now have one lane going into four, with no traffic after the bridge at any time. I'm no expert but i couldnt have designed a bigger mess if i tried!

Gav from Hawkley Hall (now down south) says...
It's absolute madness and a complete waste of cash. Buses don't like using bus lanes, so why build them?
Using the bus in Wigan will set you back more than double what it does in London. They're infrequent and don't even go into most residential areas!
Why not go one better and petition the Council to introduce Congestion Charging...?!!? That will completely stuff up Poolstock Lane, Pottery Road, Boars Head etc, etc...

Eddie from Wigan says...
Well done Wigan Council with all your air brained ideas. You have managed to bring wigan and all the surrounding areas to a standstill.

Simon from Ashton says...
Bus Lanes .... Complete waste of money, space and a possible magnet for accidents. Since the bus lane at newtown was put in, I have only seen 2 buses use it, and I travel to work via Newtown every morning. I agree with the earlier statement that If this lane was used by trafic turning into Robin Park Road, congestion would be relieved substantialy. As for the other end of Newtown Island, the four lanes business, absoulutly laughable. Whoever designed it want's a severe talking to. The Pottery Road bus lane is asking for disaster. I was traveling via Pottery road on a friday afternoon, when the bus lane was actually in force, and low and behold, 4 cars (1 being a taxi) 2 small vans and a transit all proceeded to undertake me and try and cut trafic up that was filtering into the lane at the end of the bus lane. Bus Lanes should be SCRAPPED. Increase spending on reliable, cheap public transport, and motorcycle/scooter parking and get people out of there tin boxes, which constitutes there universe when they are behind the wheel, and sort out the trafic lights farce. Congestion will drop. Four words that make cringe.... trafic calming and bus lanes. :(

Wigan Council ... Please acknowledge this call to SANITY !!! Put money back into the communities, instead of bending over for the Government.

Andy from Orrell says...
I used to go to work on the bus from Orrell to Wigan centre via Newtown for about two years. Only a handful of times did my bus use the bus lane. The drivers much prefered using the outside lane and overtake the other cars. This caused many near misses. Why not use the bus lane instead? it's crazy!

Cliff Duxbury from Standish says...
What is Simon going on about! I don't know what all the fuss is about! I can now ride my bike into wigan, travelling in the bus lane, and avoid all you moaning drivers!

Frank from Wigan says...
I live on Wigan Road just a few houses towards Standish from Gidlow cemetery (on the same side). I would put a large amount of money on the following happening soon. I or somone living on the same side off the road will be driving from Standish towards home followed by other vehicles outside the bus lane. I will indicate right and slow down to pull into my drive. The vehicle immediately behind on seeing my signal immediately swerves into the bus lane to pass me. The vehicle behind him ploughs into the back of me. How do I know? Easy it almost happens every day!

Sheila from Hindley, Wigan says...
Never mind a bus lane, the Council should try to travel between Wigan and Hindley via Ince.. It's quicker to walk during a rush hour that begins with the 'school run' and ends after 7pm. And they have the nerve to install 'traffic calming measures' along Hall Lane, Aspull, a longer alternative route into Wigan!

Mickey Mouse from Wigan says...
Why are we bothering with all this and who's listening!? The Council? In your dream and there more to come so start believing and we don't have a say in it.....!

Pat from Wigan says...
The bus lane on Pottery Road is for use by taxis as well as buses but I was driving along it outside of the times shown on the Blue Sign when a flaming bus at the bus stop on Pottery Road pulled right out in front of me as I was overtaking him - I had to swerve into the right hand lane and luckily there were no other cars at the time otherwise there would have been an accident. So its not only the car drivers who should be aware of the restriction times but the flaming bus drivers as well.

John from Wigan says...
I'm one of those hated people on the road ! Yes thats right I'm a bus driver, bus lanes are a good idea as long as they are put in the right places and I do use the bus lane heading into wigan on saddle junction (so do cars) because the lights change to green first if you time it right. As far as the pottery road bus lane that is one big cock-up for buses who have to queue to get in and for cars to get in the right lane. So for all you moaning car drivers who would rather see the buses off the road stop spitting your dummys out. P.S. if Wigan council wanted to spend money at the time of doing up saddle junction they could have spent some cash on widening the bridge.

Mark from Wigan says...
Wigan Road and Wigan Lane have always been attractive looking roads. Now with all the markings for bus lanes etc.it looks ghastly-urban grafitti and vandalism courtesy of your local council.

DAVEY from WIGAN says...
COULD ANYONE TELL ME HOW MANY TIMES HAS THE TOWN CENTRE BEEN FLAGGED IN RECENT YEARS ONLY TO BE REPAIRED TIME AND TIME AGAIN, INCLUDE THE BUS STATION, DOES NO ONE FROM OUR COUNCIL CHECK THE WORK CARRIED OUT OR DO WE PAY WITHOUT ANY GARRANTEES.

David Kearsley from Standish says...
The bus lane, in my opinion, has made both Wigan Lane and Wigan Road more dangerous. Most car users don't understand where they should drive resulting in 3 or 4 seperate flows of traffic! Parked cars further exacerbate the problem, however, were are the residents supposed to park? What was wrong with it pre-bus lane??!

Frank Cunniff from Wigan says...
i want to know what Churchill would have done!!!

chloe from wigan says...
the traffic in wigan during the week is ridiculas

Martyn from Standish says...
The Bus Lane is a good idea as long as motorists obey it, and its not THAT hard is it really. just like sticking to 30mph isn't THAT hard and the increase in child's death goes up from 50% at 30mph to 85% at 40mph, the reason all these measures are being put into place is because poeple do not obey the laws and feel they no better

COLIN from Standish says...
During peak traffic flow times the motorist can only use one lane and when the roads are quiet we are allowed to use the Bus lane as well. What`s the point!! Either do away with the bus lane or make the bus lane permenant to avoid all the confusion that there is now.

SUSAN from STANDISH says...
The bus lane is not used correctly and how there are not more accidents on Wigan Road/Lane amazes me, it is chaotic, drivers don't read the signs they just think the bus lane applies all the time. Some motorists use the car lane like a speed track, it is a nightmare!

Neil from Atherton says...
Is there an independent body responsible for monitoring the spending of our local council. The decisions to spend money on traffic schemes that don't work is completely unjustified and the people allocating the funds should be held accountable.

Paul Smith from wigan says...
the bus lanes causes chaos for residents, as if living on a main road isnt bad enough, next thing you know the council will be putting a drug/mental health rehab centre near a local primary school......o sorry,i forgot they are!!!! madness

UNAMED BUS DRIVER from WIGAN says...
For all you car drivers out there. Stop moaning about buses not keeping to their time tables. How can we, when you lot clogg up the roads with one person per car. If you shared maybe that would help. Or even better catch a lavish, stylish Firstbus.

john from wigan says...
to un-named bus driver from wigan.do you get the bus home from work,or do you drive home in your own,car if so,how many fellow colleagues do you drop off on your journey home?

karen from wigan says...
catch the bus every day into wigan town centre and the bus has never been in the bus lane. what a waste of money! the pottery road bus lane causes more traffic jams. the buses get held up on wallgate while cars try to get out of the bus lane

dave from wigan says...
just widen the railway bridge that's the main cause of the bottleneck?

Mark from Kitt Green says...
Just as Dave says, the bottleneck at the seven stars railway bridge is one of the problems and the infinite wisdom of WMBC's highways dept to make pottery Rd one lane into town ???. The bus lane at the saddle junction is about as much use as a screen door in submarine, bus drivers use the right hand lane and cut you up at the lights at Frith St, make them use it WMBC. Dont forget though folks you can use the bus lanes on Wigan Lane and Pottery Rd during off peak hours, read the blue signs before flashing your headlights and waving your fists at motorists who use them when permitted.

j from Winstanley says...
Bus lanes, traffic calming obstacles, cycle lanes - there are so many road markings; not to mention the dreaded cameras all around the borough - traffic zooming everywhere - it is becoming more and more difficult to concentrate on normal driving skills.

Paul and Jan from Crooke Village says...
I suggest that all these comments be presented to the town hall and to the local councillors and hopefully all our arguments will be discussed by those who choose to waste our money and redirect these funds to better use for our town. We do NOT NEED bus lanes and some are not even used anyway. Pottery road should have been made into a single carrageway by white lining to prevent pushing in at the end near the Ambulance station, eg. Where ever there are two lanes, it encourages some drivers to take advantage of those who wait in the queue. The road system in Wigan is in a total shambles and should be addressed by the council immediately. The louder we shout, the sooner something will be done. What say you?

pat from wigan says...
I have lived in wigan all my life yet i have never found there to be problem with the buses themselves! it is the lack of road safty in the town that is the problem! The fact that there is a lot of traffic does my head in not the buses! They are on time and easy to get to so for me there is no problem present! and one more thing wigan rules so all you people calling it go and move away coz us wiganers are very very very happy!!!

Sharon from Wirral says...
I am yet to see a bus in the bus lane!!! It just causes more confusions as to what to do when the bus lane is not active!

Paul from Hindley Green says...
When is the new linkway from m58 to atherleigh way going to be complete? anyone know?

Neal from Springview says...
Paul from Hindley Green.....bad news mate, they have put it back for at least ten years..again! Why do we keep electing these councillors if they don't listen to all of us? Anyone fancy taking them on at the next local election?

dave from bolton from bolton says...
well it funny not long ago i was in wigan up in newtown near adsa, the traffic there is mad, iwould'nt mind but that bus lane on the way up to pemberton is a waste of public money and should be scrap right away and the daft sod who came up wiv the idea should take a cut in there salary or better still go back to the drawing board, and think what the public want not the council.

environmentally friendly from wigan says...
pottery road...what a joke..when u understand the signs preceeding this shambles..a lot of people either drive in the bus lane when resticted to do so, or do not use it inside the allocated hours!! what really naffs me off is the people who try to cut in ..just right at the end of the stretch...police these jokers..makes me mad!
this major road needs severe thought from the council to ease this bottleneck combined with the saddle junction..at rush hour periods they are a nitemare!!..sorry - and on sat too.
maybe if changes are done then i will spend less on fuel consumption waiting patiently in queues -and help save my sanity and the environment.

paul kinsella from standish says...
i have been a bus driver who doesnt use the lane or lights at asda newtown simply becouse there dont help in anyway! traffic in this town is redicoulouse motorway crashes in shevington could be avoided if shevrons are placed on the road like near winsford, close a lane off where the traffic coming on the motorway at the m58 and have a filtter lane coming staight on to the motorway,as they do in shelfied ,standish is a joke as many people would say right around the county, freckilton outside preston on the st annes road got a bye pass, why becouse theres 90 people living there, people have to be killed before this council do anything at all about the roads, told to me by the council, could you run a buissness that way you would be held responcable and jailed if you killed someone, theres no money they say how many new houses are ther in standish and each one is paying there council tax theses millions flowing thought the council but where does it go?on the bin men they get a nextra hour to work, on the police how many police stations have closed or are as good as,replacing houses with muti storey flats as long as the coucil get there dit you can do it, but if its near there or there freind homes it takes a bigger back hander, there inproving schools yes and there spending more on what there getting there a roofing contractor who pick his own work at his own price i know that for a fact, unless this council stops paying its freind and collages what ever they like wigan has and will allways be behind, skelmerdale as a town providing more, charging less what more proof do you wantWIGAN BEHIND SKEM your grandparents would be so proud of the crupt councill and there doing this to you and your kids and god knows wath there kids will have done to them

Ron Leigh from wigan says...
The road markings in mesnes road and wigan lane are stupid get rid of the lot and put it back as it was i.e.all black road and a white line down the middle its graffite

Martyn Booth from Winstanley, Wigan says...
Well, Interesting information there, I know why it is on Bus lane on Pottery Road. I think it do with bus time because if car overtake on the bus lane(just case) the bus will get fed up because of the time you know what I mean? I know someone you have a stress on Pottery road. Then you need a bus for free stress or get park and ride bus from your area and once to all, I think someone is wrong. I think you make all the road bad environment and pollution in Wigan area. uh huh? I dont drive a car, I use bus any time, day, year. That make me free stress and happy. So you don't need drive a car on the Saddle Junc. or Pottery road on second lane. I know if bus driver don't care fine, Bus driver better watch out on bus lanes.

mick davies from wigan says...
put the council on a bus to Timbucktwo and start again with a new council

Cinders from anywhere says...
Love you Ian ..Drive On

Charlotte from Wigan says...
bus lanes cause absolute uproar. They are so unnecessary and cause confusion to drivers as to what times they can and cannot be used. The bus lane near ASDA is NEVER used and a waste of space. Bus drivers using the bus lane near Wigan Pier, going out of Wigan are often reluctant to give way to drivers.

Steve from Arbram says...
If the planners are serious about easing congestion and environmental issues why not phase the traffic lights in the town centre? Try driving between Parsons Walk and Darlington Street!

norman from wigan says...
wigan has the worst managed road system in the u k the t l system is anti car anti bus is almost gridlocked and the council and engineers dept couldnt care less

brian johnson from wigan says...
why do we put up with our stupid council idiots who like to spend our hard earned money making our roads look like childrens playgrounds with all these daft signs painted all over them bus lanes what never get used WHY CANT THEY MAKE SEVEN STARS ROAD TWO WAY AGAIN TO EASE THE PROBLEM THEY ARE ALL THE SAME LIKE OUR GOVERMENT CRONIES THEY LIKE TO FEATHER THERE OWN NEST FIRST THEN THINK ABOUT HOW THEY CAN CAUSE MORE UNREST WITH THE PUBLIC MOTORIST AND I THINK WIGAN METRO WENT TO A TRAFFIC LIGHT SALE TO GET AS MANY TRAFFIC LIGHTS AS THEY COULD BECAUSE YOU CANT GO TWENTY YARDS IN WIGAN WITHOUT HITTING ONE GIVE ME OLD WIGAN ANYTIME , EVEN THE NEW SHOPPING CENTER IS A WHITE ELEPHANT BECAUSE THEY CANT EVEN FILL THE OLD ONE BECAUSE OF GREEDY WIGAN COUCIL CHARGING RENTS FOR THEM I ALWAYS GO TO BOLTON NOW OR ST, HELENS EVEN PARKING YOUR CAR IS CHEAPER THERE ONE ANGRY WIGANER

Adrian Fowler from Ince says...
Like most "bus lanes" they only slow the general flow of traffic, prime example is the ridiculous attempt alongside Wigan Pier, that now backs the traffic up so bad the buses can't even get the bus lane! It is about time our councillors sat up and took ownership of some of the 21 century 'cock-ups' that make people like me wonder why we even live in the town at all. I'm originally from Hull and yes they have their fair share of bus lanes but primarily on major dual carrigeways leading directly to the city centre! I believe that the bus lanes of Wigan have done very little to reduce delays to the already shabby bus services. Why does it feel that yet another ex-council service gets preferential treatment.

jim b from wigan says...
when the goverment want people to use public transport, why doe's it cost 3.50 to get to wigan and back, when a day saver costs about 3.30. with this you can use all day, what about reducing fares maybe more people will use the bus so not as many cars on road no need for bus lanes.

Jean Glover from Orrell, Wigan says...
When they were busy altering the road at Orrell Post, one day they switched all the traffic lights off - guess what - there wasnt a queue insight on any of the roads.

tony bee from Canada says...
David Hurst, you must be some relation of Alec Hurst!!

Darren T from Wigan says...
How do Wigan council manage it? They consistently deliver Projects that NOBODY WANTS!, TIME AND TIME AGAIN! and they make us pay for them. This town is full of eyesores and derelict buildings some of them made by the town council - (The disgraceful Site of the Old Town Hall for example) and yet this council manages to waste money on tinpot road schemes.

jim from hindley says...
just get rid of the council asap

bill from newtown says...
there used to be a handy lay bye at union bridge but the council have done away with it and made some sort of a crossing and put up more signs, just a little lower down 5 yds there is a pelican crossing , so i dont understand what new one is for , the lay bye was used a lot perhaps the council didnt like it because it was handy .

bill from newtown says...
why have they built that barrier with arrows on roundabout at marus bridge its just like having a lorry at the side of you , you cant see traffic coming from right till your almost on roundabout , why did it need to be 6-7ft high just another way of slowing traffic down . nearly an accident their the other morning .

r smith from wigan says...
as any one looked into rerouting the railway as this is the main problem of Wigan, no other town seams to have this problem of narrow bridges and low bridges .

linda from astley says...
I know the answer every one in Wigan needs to buy a bus!
