Biltong

Biltong
Roadside advertisement in Wigan for Biltong, that appears to be made from cotton and some coal.

How bizarre, it might seem quite strange to us to infuse cotton and coal into a dried strip of meat.
But perhaps South Africans would look at an advertisement for Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls and think why would someone want to infuse mint into the testicles of their uncle Joe and sell them in wrappers!

I have been buying jerk from this outlet over the last year; it's great to chew on when driving long distances.

Cotton and Coal Biltong,
keeps you all aglow,
give some to your granny
and watch the bugger go.

It sounds 'disgusting'.

https://cottoncoal.co.uk/

There used to be a right 'pong' around that area of Newtown going into Goose Green around Skew Bridge, I hope that smell does not return.

Colin, you made my day with your comment about Uncle Joe's- that cheered me up thank you.

All that i can say this world is mad and daft with all the daft things that they say and do!

They cannot be mixing cotton and coal into a foodstuff. I do not l
Now live in Wigan and have no knowledge about this business. As Wigan is synonymous with cotton and coal it may be an advertising metaphor.

On Sir Bob's link, there is Welsh Whisky.

So I looked it up.

Damned expensive stuff. Anyone tried it?

Thought they were just jumping on the band wagon, but it is traditional: died out circa 1900, but recently revived.

Wonder if it will go anywhere?

Have been reading up on history of booze. Irish whiskey was considered superior to Scotch, and fetched a premium price compared with Scotch for most of its history, Scottish distilleries were able to industrialise process and increase volume far more than Irish, and the latter lost the empire market following independence, which set them back a lot.

But Irish is enjoying a renaissance, with many drinkers again saying it tastes better than Scotch.

So I wonder if Welsh also going to stake out a significant market share.

“Being so high in natural protein, biltong is the ideal post workout snack. Biltong is a natural source of Vitamin B12 which means that consuming it contributes to the production of red blood cells. This helps to keep your nervous system healthy and responsive. It also helps release energy from other consumed nutrients.”
I have never heard of the food so I looked it up on Google.

Went to Sutcliffes in the market hall today and asked if they hade Tripe infused with cotton and coal. I did not get a polite response.

Had me thinking of Peter Kay's strap line "Cheese cake - a cake with cheese" or, of course "garlic bread."

They've been selling Biltong and Jerky in Lidl for quite a while now, it's on all the checkouts alongside the paracetamols and ibuprofens. I often wondered if they ever sold any, as the box always seems full. But it must be catching on if places are producing it.

Comment by: Strangeloop on 7th May 2025 at 17:41

I may give biltong a try, Google says it is healthier than jerky.

I do buy jerky from Tesco to take camping/hiking, as being dehydrated, it keeps down the weight that I need to carry, but only rarely as I do like a good steak done on a camp fire!

Well Mick (The Lone Ranger )you finally got me to comment after reading Veronica’s comment regarding vitamin B12 I might just give it a try.

I’ve just emerged from the relative sanctity of my Anderson shelter to have a Jimmy Riddle , and I’ve noticed that there’s white smoke emanating from my chimney …

Would that mean that a new pope has been elected ? … or would it merely indicate that my chimney’s on fire ?

It may well prove prudent to ring 999 just in case methinks .

John .
It makes very little difference whether you cook your chips in lard , or use an air fryer .

Similarly , it makes a sodall difference whether you spread butter on your bread or choose to use the tasteless garbage that they promote as being a healthy alternative .

Just my opinion btw .

Remember the dozy cow that practically ruined the egg marketing board by proclaiming that eggs were causing widespread cases of salmonella ?

Everything that they say is bad for us this week , they’re telling us is good for us next week .
So don’t get sucked in pal .

All of the toss that Holland & Barret flog is nothing but an elaborate con .
In my view It’s all down to genetics at the end of the day .

When your time’s up … it’s up … thats it ….end of !
And any amount of health supplements ain’t gonna make two penn’orth of difference mate .

And on that note …

Comment by: DTease on 8th May 2025 at 00:17

Ozy, do you mean to say all that Guinness I’ve been supping all these years is NOT good for me? Have they been lying to me for all this time?

Comment by: . Ozy . on 8th May 2025 at 09:13

Well , you’re still with us DTease , so it couldn’t have been doing that much harm .
It’s often a case of mind over matter I find .
I don’t care for the stuff personally , but if you don’t mind suppin’ Guinness , then it don’t matter I suppose .

Comment by: Mick on 8th May 2025 at 09:46

Ozy, I once bought a box of 500 pills from Holland & Barret, and that qualified me to buy another box of 500 for just a penny.
So to me that's good value.

Comment by: . Ozy on 8th May 2025 at 14:11

Yeah , but how much did you pay for the first box Mick ?
And more importantly , did they do you any good ?

It’s just a con Mick …
One word sums it all up … Placebo .

Riding yer bike’ll do you far more good than a shedful of health supplements .

Comment by: Mick on 8th May 2025 at 18:30
