beautiful when they are in flower but short lived and then it is a pink mess on the floor

These trees are a waste of time, if you want a colourful tree in your garden that will last you should get a Japanese Maple.

Glorious but all too fleeting.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 21st April 2025 at 07:31

That is an amazing amount of blossom!
Fleeting it maybe Peter but wonderful while it lasts.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st April 2025 at 07:50

I bet that Jag parked underneath looks a treat when all those pink petals come tumbling down.

I know what PeterP means, especially when the blossom coincides with a few windy days and disappears almost before we have witnessed it, but I would hate to see a Spring where there was no blossom on the trees, however short-lived.

Ever reliable Contrary Mick, if you had posted a photo of a Japanese Maple he would have preferred a Cherry Tree.

Noticed this last week Dennis, it looks beautiful, but not much of a view from the upstairs windows of Hollydean .Certainly needs trimming back, when out of season by a professional. Good Photo.

Fleeting yes , but blossom is only one aspect of the Cherry tree . They are at their most glorious in autumn .

Comment by: Owd Reekie on 21st April 2025 at 10:34

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

By A E Housman.

In this instance wearing pink but exactly the same sentiment.

It looks like the council own the tree but will only prune on its own land, not on the private land.

I don’t see the petals as “ mess”. …they’re delicate remnants that stay around a bit longer.
Nicer still blowing in the breeze. A beautiful tree and a striking photo Dennis. On the other side of the fence in my garden there’s a gorgeous Apple Blossom and on the other side I’m awaiting the May Blossom to flower. The Cherry Blossom won’t damage the car the petals are not sticky.

“To everything there is a seasonal and a time for every purpose under heaven.”
When the blossom falls off this tree it leaves a layer of pink snow around its base.
Cherry Blossom is part of Spring now, just like daffodils and bluebells.

Glad to see Garry posting again yesterday, welcome back Garry.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st April 2025 at 12:27

Well worded Dennis.
As the cherry blossom fades away, the lilac tree is now coming into bloom at the bottom of my garden, can’t way to smell it when in full blossom.
And so the seasons will flow.

My Dad lived in Hollydene twenty years ago, and in an upstairs room, right near where the tree is. It’s certainly grown a lot in those twenty years, and is beautiful. I lived in St Davids Crescent, but that was fifty seven years ago, how time flies.
Lovely photo Dennis.

Here is another reason why we shouldn't have them because of thery have very thick roots that lift up our footpaths making them uneven and dangerous.
And to answer the person who said they look lovely in autumn when they are full of cherries, not all of our flowering cherry trees produce inedible fruit.
But if you want to see some that does, you can find some alongside the Douglas near to Tesco.

Hey up! Fido’s still wrestling with his bone…
Dtease can you sort him out…?
Dogs love trees they always stop what they’re doing if there’s a tree in the vicinity

The Vertriloquist as spoken, but it appears Teasy is not listening anymore.
What time will be taking Irene the puppet out of the suitcase.

That’s rich from you with so many names to hide behind. Who is it today …Tom, Tom the Piper’s son?. Irene is more than capable of speaking for herself.
