Never enough signage for road works the more the merrier so pedestrians don't fall into the hole or a motorist does the same

Comment by: Wigginlad on 20th April 2025 at 05:40

OTT maybe and I'll bet the guys who put them there would agree but in these days of H&S and red tape, very necessary if you want to avoid the blame and claim artists.

I've counted 17 piece of safety equipment around the workings.
They've put in a waterpipe, I don't know what for but was told it's for the fire brigade to use if there is a forest fire, but I have my doubts because the canal is only 50 yards away.

Basic layout for signing and guarding roadworks. I doubt Haigh Hall Drive is traffic-free, pedestrians are traffic too.

H&S is about protecting people, apportioning blame is a different matter.

It's Easter Day, can't we have something more appropriate?

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 20th April 2025 at 09:25

I assume they are undertaking repair work to the road and drainage in readiness for the new electric vehicles taking passengers from the Plantation Gates to Haigh Hall.
The restoration work is well underway at the Plantation Gates, they are now covered in scaffolding but I took a photo before it was erected. It might pop up on pad.

I had the same thought Bradshaws Girl !

Water pipe? They've been having you on, look on the opposite side where a barrier post has been installed in a concrete base - the council are installing a Toll Gate here, and are to begin charging cyclists if they want to go through to the hall or beyond, with the fares helping to maintain roads.

My Dad was sacked from the Highways department for stealing. I couldn't believe it at first, but when I visited him at his home, the signs were there.....

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th April 2025 at 11:32

Agreed, Bradshaw's Girl and Helen. A p-a-d regular has emailed a lovely photo today that would have been perfect for Easter Sunday. It would have been nice to have had an Easter-themed photo for today's p-a-d.

Comment by: Patel on 20th April 2025 at 12:57

At least these roadworks are on a country lane. They had the road up near my shop for 2 weeks recently. No compensation for me and the other shopkeepers. Pat.

Comment by: Chris on 20th April 2025 at 13:18

It's not a toll gate at all. On the right side of the road, there is now a newly installed lockable water tap.
I've just walked past it BTW, Irene this is Wiganworld PADs that get viewed by people who don't know it's Easter, same lot who didn't know it was Christmas until Bob Geldoff told them.

Comment by: Pat McC on 20th April 2025 at 13:21

I agree with you Irene, Helen and Bradshaw Girl. Nowadays the true meaning of Easter seems to have been lost in the fog of commercialism. Trying to buy Easter cards in a supermarket was a no no. Plenty of cards showing fluffy rabbits, chocolate eggs etc but nothing to do with the true Easter message. Very sad.

Comment by: Veronica on 20th April 2025 at 16:42

Yes it is disappointing and a bit mundane for Easter Sunday ... I was expecting to see lambs skipping about or at least a rabbit or two. A church steeple in the distance or a massive rock in front of a cave half rolled away…..wait a minute that’s too much in the realms of fantasy for PaD…. How about a chocolate egg instead - treat ourselves!

Comment by: Mick on 20th April 2025 at 16:56

Irene, sweetheart, by saying a Pad regular has emailed a lovely photo to you today that would have been perfect for Easter Sunday.
By saying that, it sounds like you and whoever have a little clique going.
It makes me sad to think that I have to go all the way into Haigh Hall plantations to take a photo and then it seems it's not appropriate because of today's date.
Just remember, this is how wars start.

Just had another look at this, and it's an Edwards Standpipe

A very happy Easter Sunday to you all. We have just had the most wonderful day with our family also celebrating joint birthdays.
Mr Patel, I trust your business will soon recover as I’m sure it will.

“ that’s how wars start”!
A bit OTT Michaeleen…Gwon,gwon….and have a chocolate egg….

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th April 2025 at 20:18

Mick, Sweetheart, I don't have a "clique" with anyone.....I know a few of the people who submit photos personally and have known some of them for many years, long before p-a-d. The person who sent me the photo by email sent it for my personal perusal, nothing to do with photo-a-day. You seem to think my criticism about today's photo not being an Easter photo is aimed at YOU , when it most certainly isn't.....it is the admin team who decide what is shown on each day, not the submitters of the photos..... and I am well aware you had no control over that. I just hoped admin might have chosen an Easter photo for Easter Sunday, but perhaps no-one sent one in? You have judged me unfairly there, and why ME? Three other people today made exactly the same comment, ( please go back and check through the comments and you will see that), so why didn't you include THEM in your criticism instead of just me?

Comment by: Mick on 20th April 2025 at 21:34

Irene it was sending you a photo privately that caused me some concern, now, who would do that and why, if it was only to cheer you up.
Next time you're down in the dumps because the Pad is not to your taste just send me a message and Ill will see what I can do.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th April 2025 at 22:04

It's hardly an MI5 secret mission, , Mick, sending a photo to a friend via email or whatsapp, these days. A lot of people send me photos to cheer me up, and I send photos to other people. Holidays, pets, weddings, grandchildren, forties events. It's what people do now that we have email, and I am at a loss as to why it should cause you concern?? But thankyou for your reply. I am off to bed now. Goodnight everyone.

Comment by: Veronica on 20th April 2025 at 22:17

Good night Irene good night. Never mind Clouseau he hasn’t a clue…it’s a waste of time explaining.

Comment by: Mick on 21st April 2025 at 09:02

It was the way you said it Irene as though you were a bit special by getting your own photo sent to you.
Can you not see how you and your shadow are coming over by following one another around and getting your own priivate pads.
I took a lovely Easter themed photo in London last week that you would have loved, it had solders, baby lambs, eggs and jusus in the background nailed on a cross.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st April 2025 at 10:28

Oh put a sock in it, Mick!

Comment by: Veronica on 21st April 2025 at 11:18

I don’t think there’s a sock big enough Irene.
…my stomach’s aching laughing.
There’s nobody follows you about more than him! He’s like a dog with a bone!
