Handsome

Handsome
Not being an expert, I don't know what make and model this little birdie is, but he's a handsome little fellow isn't he?
On Arley Hall bridge over the canal.

Its a Nuthatch Dennis ( Sitta europaea) , I,ve took many photos of these , in Haigh Plantations , they tend to nest in holes , plastering around the entrance with mud , when wet with the Nuthatch passing through it is a perfect size when set, which prevents larger birds invading their nest. Male and female and juvenile birds look alike .
Excellent Photo Dennis, with the Nikon .

Comment by: Walt (North Yorks) on 29th March 2025 at 05:49

Dennis, definitely a ' Nuthatch' marra, I have only seen one or two of these birds, usually in woodlands.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th March 2025 at 06:09

It’s a lovely little Nuthatch Dennis.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 07:08

In my little book of Observers Birds. It looks like a Blue Tit.
“ Everyone’s favourite distinguished by its blue cap, wings and tail and yellow under parts, marked by a thin dark streak on its belly”.
A lovely photo.

Comment by: Ian L on 29th March 2025 at 07:20

It's a Nuthatch

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 29th March 2025 at 07:21

Could be a Nuthatch, the colours are similar.
You were quick to catch him sitting still Dennis !

Comment by: Anne on 29th March 2025 at 07:56

Dennis…….it’s a Nuthatch, plenty of them in my neighborhood especially on my birdfeeders.

Comment by: Pat McC on 29th March 2025 at 08:06

Dennis, according to my husband, it's a Nuthatch. A lovely little bird. Thank you for this.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th March 2025 at 08:16

I think you’ll get some well deserved comments today Dennis, charming picture of a charming little Nuthatch.

Comment by: Kathleen Pressey on 29th March 2025 at 08:38

some type of woodpecker? I'm looking at the long beak

Comment by: john on 29th March 2025 at 08:41

It's a Nuthatch Denis.

Comment by: Mick on 29th March 2025 at 08:54

It's a nuthatch

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 09:07

Oh well! It must be it must be a cousin of the
little Blue Tit. ;o)

Comment by: Mick on 29th March 2025 at 09:08

Veebs only thing that looks like blue tit this morning is you.

Comment by: WN6 on 29th March 2025 at 09:11

I think Dennis has got the message by now but Veronica might be a touch colour blind. No offence meant Veronica XXX.

Comment by: Twitcher on 29th March 2025 at 09:13

Is definitely an Eagle Owl.

Comment by: Alan on 29th March 2025 at 09:36

Ha, no where near a blue tit, the colours and size is a million miles away from a Nuthatch.
I think it's time to check your book again Veronica.

Comment by: Poet on 29th March 2025 at 09:41

A really well taken picture Dennis. .I think many people mistakenly think they've seen a kingfisher when this little chap shows up .
A fine location is Arley. Lots of sweet smelling honeysuckle growing there last summer .

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th March 2025 at 09:43

Twitcher, I think it is more likely to be a Bison, they could fly over for the winter, they definitely have wings.
I know that for certain as I once had Buffalo Wings in an American Diner.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 10:17

Can’t be good at everything it seems it’s mostly the males on here who have the time for bird spotting - Us ladies have other things to do.
I’d best throw my little book of bird paintings away then.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 10:21

Mickaleen you are a daft ‘T..’
Every morning..

A Canada Goose fluttered in
V put the glass to her eye ,
And with confidence did declare ,
"There goes a butterfly " ,

Next two newts came into view ,
V got out her binocs ,
And quick as a flash said she knew
"They were a pair of crocs ",

Then a Hippo came about ,
V looked through her telescope ,
Stating clearly without doubt ,
"That is an antelope" .

When a giraffe came to feast
By the trickling beck ,
Said V squinting through her specs ,
"What a fine wildebeest " .

I wouldn't have had a clue what that gorgeous little chap is, and I only know what a blue-tit looks like, Veronica, because they have been pointed out to me. We don't have a garden and don't get birds in our backyard, unfortunately, but we have a bat that appears nightly every Summer and I am anxiously awaiting his return this year. Lovely photo, Dennis.

Comment by: WN6 on 29th March 2025 at 12:11

Veronica, my comment regarding your observation was I hope received as humorous.
Mick is just down right rude but we all know he is a bit of a Bird Brain.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 29th March 2025 at 12:17

Veronica, we’ll have to stand together on this. It seems like we are the only ones who didn’t know it was a Nuthatch. Mind you everybody may say that we are a PAIR of Blue T**s!

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 29th March 2025 at 12:37

I’ve just noticed that if you bring up the Metadata of a photo of a bird on the iPad photos app it not only gives you all the data about the photo but it also tells you what make and model the bird is!

Every day in every way
I’m getting better and better.
We live and learn. (At least I do).

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 13:37

Believe me or not but in my little book of bird paintings ( which I bought purposely to paint some of them at sometime in watercolour) . I found
Bearded Tit, Longtailed Tit,Marsh Tit, Willow Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit and a Nuthatch on the next page! I do recognise the Nuthatch is denser in colour than the Blue Tit and a few grams weightier plus the tail is more rounded. The precious little Blue Tit is brighter and hanging upside down on a thin branch.
Which goes to show friends you really do learn something every day. So thank you all for making me go back to look again. And no offence taken WN6 just my turn for a blunder! My next project at the Art Club is a dear little Blue Tit. xxxx

Comment by: Birdwatch on 29th March 2025 at 14:10

Irene how do you know it's a little chap.
Could be female!
It's a beautiful bird.

Comment by: Lou mosey on 29th March 2025 at 14:50

so we now know what the bird on the fabulous photo is, and very good on a bar-b-que too, though one is not enough and apparently, or so I'm told, they're reminiscent of squirrel - doh, lamb chop would be better.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 14:58

Poet I am shortsighted but not that bad! I have drops for Glaucoma and a cataract forming but according to my last visit at the hospital it’s stable!!! I think they are just hoping I could pop my clogs before I need anything doing!
Brilliant poem…I have boarded the wrong bus on a few occasions though in my time. But that’s another tale…

Comment by: Part 2 , for a wonderful lady . on 29th March 2025 at 17:21

Then along came Jenny Wren
Sitting on the garden fence ,
Said V as she peered through the lens
"I reckon that'll be a battery hen" ,

Then a blackbird downward swooped
Upon a bird table landed on ,
V got out her Observer's book
And identified it as a swan ,

Is that a Robin singing gaily ?
"No , that is a Capercaillie" ,
A twitcher needs a little luck
To tell a penguin from a duck .

This birdwatching lark is tough to learn ,
With all those spots and patches ,
Which make it very hard to discern
Blue tits from nuthatches .

Nuthatches are regular visitors to the nut feeder in our garden in Standish

Comment by: Veronica on 29th March 2025 at 19:42

Well Poet I’ve given you the chance of writing another poem. As they’re just for me I must copy and paste them! Thank you very much. ;o))

Comment by: Night Owl on 29th March 2025 at 21:17

It’s Wigan Bird. Me thinks it’s a Tweety Pie Eater.

Comment by: Poet on 29th March 2025 at 21:31

Beautiful birds have always been my inspiration Miss V .

Comment by: Tom on 29th March 2025 at 22:03

I can't abide by the way these birds creep around trees.

Comment by: Veronica on 30th March 2025 at 08:19

That’s a strange thing to say Tom. Birds belong in the trees and hedges.
I love pegging washing out and listening to them twittering to one another in the garden.

Comment by: Peter on 30th March 2025 at 13:12

Veronica, its a wind-up, take no notice.
