Magnolia on Wigan Lane

Magnolia on Wigan Lane
Just further up on the right past the Cherry Gardens. Magnificent flowers in pale pink and white when in bloom.
They are one of the oldest flowering plants as fossils have been found dating back over 20 million years. They are thought to have evolved to be pollinated by beetles as beetles existed long before the evolution of bees.

Much as I would like to claim it, I don’t think that this photo is one of mine

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th March 2025 at 03:42

Thanks Dennis, it’s one of mine.
Also I am not 100% sure that fact about Bees is correct, I think they evolved much earlier from Wasps.

The information given makes me think it’s one of MR. T’s.

I have a Magnolia in by garden but it is only now coming into bud. The Magnolia in the photo is well into flower and has already started to lose a lot of them. May it keep flowering for a few more weeks they are lovely to look at during spring time.

That’s a magnificent Magnolia…( why would somebody use your name to send a photo in? ) it happened with me the other day. Might be a mistake Dennis.

Comment by: Arthur on 28th March 2025 at 07:17

Well whoever took the photo it's brilliant.
Is just a shame the blossom only that's days. I'm not sure what it is, but Magnolias Springs to mind.

Comment by: Kath H on 28th March 2025 at 07:59

It is beautiful. We admire it every time we drive past.

Comment by: Mick on 28th March 2025 at 08:10

Maybe somebody pinched your camera, Dennis? but with a copy and paste write up like that it's looking like one of good old Colins to me.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th March 2025 at 08:10

As beautiful as these flowers might be, I find them a bit unsettling, like huge coral pink Barnacles.
There are quite a few in gardens along Wigan Road and Wigan Lane.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th March 2025 at 08:33

Just beautiful! I love blossom time. I collected my granddaughter from school one Spring day when she was in the infants' class and she said, "You can tell it's Spring, Grandma, because there's "blosmuss" on the trees"! Edie will be 18 in April and naturally she says "blossom" these days but her grandad and I still call it blosmuss!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th March 2025 at 08:44

Thanks all.
I do like to do a bit of research when I post a photo, the information I got regarding pollination was on the origin of Magnolias but later looking at the evolution of Bees it seems to contradict this. Can’t always get everything right, so now I will buzz off!

Comment by: Mick on 28th March 2025 at 08:51

We should never have imported them in the first place; all they do is cover our streets and cars in slippery petals.

In that case they should be a favourite of Slipping and Sliding Slippery Mick.

Comment by: Brian on 28th March 2025 at 09:50

Sorry Dennis and Colin, my bad. I've corrected my mistake.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th March 2025 at 09:59

I can think of a lot worse things on Wigan's streets these days than petals! Do some people never stop moaning?!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th March 2025 at 10:13

No problem Brian, I think most folk know who’s who these days. Cheers.

Comment by: Pat McC on 28th March 2025 at 10:17

Beautiful blossoms, they look so elegant (if that can be said of flowers!) Our neighbours have magnolia trees; they're in bloom now and look stupendous. This must be a good year for them. Love your vowel-less comment Ozy!

Comment by: DTease on 28th March 2025 at 10:28

Ozy, I’ve been having trouble with my vowels lately. I’ve been up and downstairs every five minutes.
Mi bum’s as red as a cherry!

Comment by: Platt Bridger on 28th March 2025 at 10:33

Irene correct, dog poo and rubbish thrown out of passing cars, vans etc.
Galloways pie shop at Platt bridge, some people buy a pie, come out and start to eat it, only the throw the paper bag an the floor. Now I've counted 4 Council bins nearby. Disgusting.

It is beautiful. We admire it every time we drive past.

Just over 12 months ago my family and I moved from Cypress, TX to Magnolia, TX. You can probably guess why it is called Magnolia. It is a beautiful small town with just over 1,000 residents. It became in the late 1880's with the advent of a railway being built.

Comment by: Mick on 28th March 2025 at 12:51

It's not moaning, Irene; it's just pointing out the facts: They do make a mess and are very slippery to walk on. Wait until you are older, then you will know.
Yes its a funny language is English, why can't we spell things like they sound.

Comment by: Poet on 28th March 2025 at 13:56

I bet half the walls in the country are painted Magnolia .

Comment by: Veronica on 28th March 2025 at 14:13

If you’re moaning now Mr Burns will you be moaning when the Cherry Blossom are shedding their petals?. I love seeing the petals blowing in the breeze - they remind me of snowflakes but not as cold.
Ps you already use language as it sounds…Their , there, they’re !

Back in the day Magnolia was the most popular paint over wood chip wallpaper. People really knew how to liven up a wall back then.

Comment by: Gary on 28th March 2025 at 17:26

B&Q - the real issue was scraping it off. It was akin to shrapnel. Dreadful stuff.

Have you ever watched the film Steel Magnolias with Dolly Parton, very moving, emotional but very entertaining.
