Sundown

Photo: Poet (Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F)
The eve of a blood moon . A fleeting thing . Two minutes later it was gone. Better than tele is God's cinema. The atom bomb sun won't fall exactly like this again. What a blessing to have seen it .
A new day has come. No fault finding with this one....or have I spoken too soon.
A good one Poet.
Day or Night, Dusk till Dawn, the ever changing canvas of the heavens. Every few minutes it’s a different picture. No adverts and for free!
Beautiful reminder of what we fail to appreciate and contemplate more often Poet.
One of the downfalls of living in Shevington is that we get to many of these sunsets as the setting sun goes down over Parbold Hill.
Some days it gets so bad that we have to close our curtains so we can see our TV
Excellent photo Poet.
That just doesn't happen in Shevington Mick, it all depends which way your house is facing and where your TV is
located.
Brilliant photo Poet, thanks.
Mick, you are ruining this site with some of your daft nonsense.
People with houses facing West will have that problem with the Sun, Mick. not just Shevington near Parbold.
The same happens to people in Yorkshire.
Poet that's so beautiful it took my breath away. Thank you.
Mick change your telly for one with anti glare or change the contrast or just move your telly away from the direct sunlight.Poet nice to capture either the sun rise/set well done . One day last week the sun rise just made the sky bright red in colour then after a stort time started to break into its mottled effect
Sorry Poet, forgot to mention. Great photo once again. Thanks.
Beautiful skies like this one always reminds me of Rudyard Kipling’s poem.
“ When Earth’s last picture is painted and the tubes are twisted and dried.
We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it- lie down for an aeon or two,
Till the Master of All Good Workmen shall put us to work anew……….’’..
We missed it but what a wonderful sky you captured Poet.
I live on Broadriding Road off Mile Lane, and we have the same problem. There is nothing in front of us, so we can sometimes see the sea. We got blinds fitted, but they didn't help, so now we have blackout curtains.
My husband finds it hard driving against the setting sun, like we get on Miles lane, so he comes home via Back lane.
It's actually good to know there is a downfall to living in Shevington after being led to believe it was perfection. Our little living room in Abram faces west and we just close he curtains in the evening sun so we can see the telly , and my husband wears sunglasses when driving into the sun. We're just grateful to see the sun..... the problems it causes with vision are easily overcome.
Lovely photo Poet, but I couldn't have gone outside to see that; I don't like phenomena in the sky except rainbows!
Well ! … words blimmin’ we’ll fail me…
In fact , tha con come round and colour me blinkin’ astounded .
You’re trying to tell me there’s downfalls attached to living in Shevvy Mick ?
Nay lad ! … I’m not having that .
Nay! I say …
Nay! , Nay ! , and thrice Nay ! sez Ozy .
So theer !
Why not just get thisel a wireless ? … Problem solved . I don’t get any glare off my cat’s whisker set-up .
I’m just grateful I have the sun pouring through my back French windows facing south… keeps the room nice and warm in winter. Plus I can see, the tops of the Welsh Mountains upstairs. Yes it is a problem facing West at times in the evenings I’ve discovered that as well. It’s lovely to see the sun setting at Rivington though from a high vantage point.
phenomena - a strange word to say, and if you can't say it sing it - https://youtu.be/gHMb-5kiNdg?feature=shared
No downfall in Shevy Irene.
We do live in a secluded area. Many can only hope to dream of.
Beautiful photo Poet, one of the best.
If phenomena is the wrong word I apologise, Kermit....I don't profess to be an intellectual. I'm sure people knew what I meant. Ozy, I can just see you dashing in to listen to "Dick Barton, Secret Agent", on your wireless!
One or two vampires posting today I think :-) . For me light is good . The clocks go forward at the end of the month which seems might cause some turmoil in Shevy .
Anyone who likes the night sky should take a look at ' Life of a Mountain ' , tonight BBC4 , 7.00 pm . You won't believe just how many stars are up there in the darkness of Eskdale .
Thank you all for commenting .
I have to agree about the night sky, I've seen some magnificent displays in the northern and southern hemisphere while working offshore.
I saw lots of falling stars that looked like they had crashed down 100 yards away,
Another place I remember seeing the fantastic night sky was when I was cruising down the Yansti River in a remote part of China
Best sunsets and sunrises I can remember seeing was offshore Borneo and Indonesia. We're you always got massive black storm clouds.
Martin, my comment wasn't against you or Vera; I have been through Shevy many times and it is indeed a nice place. But one of its residents looks down on those of us who don't live there, and on those who live in council property, and it gets a bit wearing. There isn't only me who feels like that on here, but my apologies if my comment seemed out of place. Best wishes to you. I hope I'm not a vampire, Poet! I don't bite, honest!
I’m just harkenin ‘ Whispering Bob Harris on the cat’s whisker here Irene . Brilliant music … none of yer rap bloody hip hop garbage… but proper stuff like we used to get to hear .
And on the topic of t.v…
There’s buggerall been shown on telly that I would consider worth watching ever since they stopped screening the test card , so I don’t understand what Mick’s getting all worked up about .
Married at first sight Australia … my backside.
Christ ! … Roger Mellie the man on the telly comes up with better ideas for programmes than this lot .
And the least said about Bradley Walsh and yon soft lad of his the better in my view .
Irene, don't drag yourself down. I only tell the truth about Shevy. I'm sure you, Veebs and deeteas mention Shevy far more than me, and while we are on about sunsets, I bet you have seen some crackers when you are up in the caravan on the Yorkshire moors.
I'm pretty sure you're not Irene , but I reckon you maybe a bit of a Whitby goth .
Does your dislike of cosmic phenomena stem from the sheer awesomeness of it ? I suppose it could be a little frightening in the way that people experienced the sublime in the 18th century . They say that fine ladies shook with terror when they saw the Alps .
no need to apologise there our Irene because I too find that phenomena is a wonderful word and describes anything exceptional and remarkable, just like the song we muppets did and Poets sky
We live right on the coast and when the sun sets in the bay, sometimes the light reflections make it look like there are two suns going down into the sea. Absolutely blinkin' beautiful. Veronica, thank you for that beautiful quote - I've never heard it but will now look it up - profound. Thank you Poet for such a beautiful photo a day.
I like poets photo and o bit o poetry. Nice one Veron, I also like Mr Kipling and.... his exceedingly good cakes.
May I say folk shut their curtains after watching the telly yesterday because Wigin got knocked out of the challenge Cup.
Groan over. Hull deserved the win.
Good photo Poet.
It’s a longish poem Pat…just put the first line in and Kipling’s lovely lines will come up. It’s one of his more obscure ones.
The thing is Mick there's nothing famous about Shevy apart from your house and the Parish Council. Was there ever anybody famous from there? ( apart from yourself) there doesn’t seem to be much history to the place. I mean Wigan is famous for the Romans and the Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie plus the pies and mint ball's and Rugby. For instance where I live it’s famous for the Luddites burning a factory down and the perpetrators sent to Australia. Nobody would invest in the town after that. A cow had its head chopped off and we had a famous film star Robert Shaw plus Frannie Lee amongst others. Oh and the Metal Box! so really we’ve put your village on the map….you should be grateful….
Fair appraisal from Veronica.
May I add they did send perpetrators to Oz and their close neighbour Hulton who was also Sheriff of Lancaster at that time, made sure they didn't riot on his estate next by having at least one of the Westhoughton mill burning, luddites hanged by the neck until he was dead. He was a young boy by the name of Charleson if I recall. Hulton also read the riot act leading to the slaughter at Peterloo some years later. Apart from that his workers on the Hulton estate were paid under the truck system. Later the Pretoria pit on the Hulton estate blew up one Christmas and although his descendents weren't blamed they didn't come out of it smelling of roses many years later, when it came to remembering the hundreds who perished on the Hulton patch.
By all means correct me at the next luddite meeting folks, but only if you know.. the secret handshake.
Well, I was born in a stable on Church Lane Shevington on the 1st of September 1947; how's that for starters?
Shevy famous for beauty and rural Country side and is a sought after area if you are lucky enough to live there.
The place is naturally lovely.
Mick cares for the place where he lives.
I did know all that TD well done. Also of the little lad (12 yrs?)who was hanged. I think one man did get back from Oz according to letters written to his wife. It’s a long time since I read books about it. Westhoughton will never forget the pit disasters either they will go down in history. A lot of other history besides. Don’t forget the Howfen Weavers either. ‘Sit thi deawn!’
I don’t think there will be any pilgrimages to the Shevy stable Mick….
Yes we do realise Kath there’s many places around Wigan that are lovely ..Mick thinks his place is better than anywhere else and we must live on the wrong side of the tracks. It’s his way I suppose he can’t help being a show off. Shevy is no different to any other place it’s got its good points and it’s bad points.
I think it's the Houghton Weavers.
Not Howfen Weavers. Great singers.
You was almost there Veronica.
I did Veronica. Beautiful poem, thank you.
I know Tony Berry’s family very well especially his sister Theresa (one sister a nurse died young) His mum Amy as well. A good family. His brother Jim seems to have taken Tony’s place. A very good singer in his youth around Westhoughton. We always call Westhoughton people ‘ Howfeners’ it’s a tradition Kath despite their fame.
Glad you liked the poem Pat. I like the one where he’s asking about his son who died in the 1st WW.
