Newly Painted Pipe

Photo: Mick Byrne (.)
Wow! I’m overcome with emulsion.
A masterpiece . You can't deny it. .
This must be a very important pipe that it is deemed to grace PAD. Or have we run out of views to post on here?We will have the architects raving about the shape and form of this structure and depth of colour against the graffiti walls to the right of the pipe.I hope they have painted the railings to the left or they will stand out has grotty rusting railings
Yes indeed Peter, high pressure gas main part of the network installed early 1950's along side was the original 'White Bridge ' a wooden structure replaced when the JJB was built. The buildings are part of the Walkers Bros works so important to the war effort.
It looks as if they have either not completed the work or have not bothered to paint the left hand side.
Reminds me of Eddie Wareing.
Agree DTease.
Valsparational!
Another pipe dream…it won’t make Countryfile Calendar…that’s for sure. Is it a competition for ‘Worst Photos of Wigan World’….? Are there no Dandelions peeping through anywhere? Disappointing..
Chris
Yes Eddy Waring, the voice of Rugby League.
Love him or loathe him.
"Ooop and under" was his catchphrase.
This is what photo a day of Wigan is all about, Wigan is not just about town centre buildings.
I can see what you mean by it reminding you of good old Eddie, Chris.
Mrs Know it all, the photo is a perfect photo of a piece of Wigans history.
No it’s not what it’s all about Mick, behave yourself.
If this is what Wigan World is all about Lord save it. Same yesterday. Come back Oy ….as others have mentioned.
By the way hide behind another name …one of many…
If it was a "high pressure gas main", shouldn't it have been painted yellow as per the national color-coding system?
Reminds of ‘inspirational’ work by architects Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano who first designed what was known as ‘Inside Out Buildings’. Pipes and Girders on the outside like the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyds Building in London.
They never expected to win prizes but now they are much acclaimed.
They must have walked along this tow path and seeing this it sewed the seeds of their future inspiration and international acclaim.
I doubt though that this will ever receive any awards, but you never know!
Thanks Mike for bringing this unknown gem of an architectural / engineering masterpiece to the world’s attention.
Have no idea why this reminds anyone of Eddie Wareing. Such is the power of the unconscious I suppose. It reminds me of Scholes in the 1960's on a Sunday afternoon. I can't tell you why either. Something to do with the grot.
Well ! … it’s beginning to look as though there’s no alternative .
It seems as though I’m just going to have grasp the nettle and get out there and take a couple of shots myself.
But again , the odds of getting them published on here is somewhat akin to being struck by lightning … so why even bother ?
And this my friends is why p.a.d is practically dying on its feet .
It seems that only the chosen few get to see their photos published on this site , and this biased outlook has been highlighted previously … on a number of occasions in fact , but nothing changes .
A bloody gas pipe for Christs sake !
Give me strength .
You are right .ozy but it isn’t just the quality of the pics which are having a negative effect on the website. I personally know 2 people who do not like p.a.d. because of the casual racism which, hopefully, seems to have diminished recently.
Your quiet correct Ozy in what you say, but it shouldn't come as a surprise to you because you know about me being born in a Shevington stable.
Wasn’t there once a swing bridge about there. I seem to remember cycling from Westwood lane along the edge of the west coat main line then crossing the canal onto Chapel lane. Would be in the fifties, early sixties.
It’s a shame really that our once lively and buzzing site is reduced to this.
Contributions from some top quality photographers was the order of the day and they were matched by interesting, amusing and intelligent comments.
Now, apart from Colin and one or two others most of them have gone elsewhere.
The likes of Dave Oy, Frank Orrell and others have tried to come back and step things up a bit, but all to no avail.
Hopefully things will get better. I do hope so because a lot of people still enjoy seeing the photos of Wigan and district.
Ozy it's a Wigan Gas Pipe so that's all that matters.
I'm not sure about there being a swing bridge there Anne but is a footbridge that now gets well used by the football and rugby supporters
I agree Dtease…it’s definitely the quality that has disappeared…But to me it seems like some are just posted to cause a stir and get a reaction... yesterday’s offering was just an example.
The funny thing is I am sure if I remember correctly the person who is being run down on here, for taking rubbish photos had one of his chosen to be used as an advertisement on the front page of WW for Photo-a-Day.
It could be water. If it was a gas pipe it would be yellow.
