I thought Shevy was a utopia to some WW members but this photo shows even Shevy has its grot spots and concrete jungle

There are no canals in Shevington and that’s Gathurst Viaduct.

Three modes of transport, lots to look at - great photo, thanks Mick. A lovely sunny day and nature softening the harshness of the structure of the bridges.

Comment by: Arthur on 23rd February 2025 at 08:57

Four modes of Transport, bicycle, boat, train and car. Just missing a plane.

Lovely view Mick but I think this is in Gathurst unless they’ve changed the boundaries again.
I’ve been across both bridges many times but never under them which makes it interesting for me.

Anything north of the Duggie, east of Calico Brook and west of Mill Brook is in Shevington.

Gathurst Viaduct as on the map with the railway bridge further along from Gathurst Station.
Funny though Gathurst Golf Club is Miles Lane, Shevington , although that be be the Club House and postal address.
Regardless It’s still a good picture though with contrasting modes of transportation through the ages, Canal, Rail and Road, not forgetting Mick’s Shanks’s Pony and possible other means of transport, Penny Farthing perhaps!

Yer gonna need a bigger magnet fert drag that back ter the yard Big Harold!

The canal came first, then the railway and then motorway.
All man made, and all used every single day. The Motorway being the busiest.

I can't see any ducks, had them Via ducks flown away when the photo was taken, or had they ducked down under the water?

I doubt “ there’s owt in theer” before Owd Reekie el al asks. But is that the Love Boat in the distance? It looks quite peaceful but I bet it’s noisy with motorway ….

Gathurst Golf moved mile lane when the M6 cut through it.
I remember the new viaduct being described as the 8th wonder of the world by one of the Wigan newspapers and people coming from allover just to see i

Mick, I bet when you took this photo it would have reminded you of that day a lorry fell off the bridge with you stood under it, then you attempting to rescue the driver from the cab which had ended up in the river Douglas.

The last time I tried to have dog walk along there I and Ollie had to turn back because the pad was so bad, it was potholed and full of clay slutch, the pad looks to be tarmacadamed now and okay for walking or the battle of which cyclists have right of way - the Shevington Peacocks going thataway or the Parbold Stags coming thisaway.

No matter where you go there's always a pile of dumped litter, though if they put a litter bin there it will only attract the mattress dumpers, I was reading a news article about Ben Nevis and of all things a dumped Ironing Board was found? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-67437740

Comment by: Pat McC on 23rd February 2025 at 15:19

Arthur, the three modes of transport I was referring to were the waterway, railway and motorway.

Comment by: John(Howfen) on 23rd February 2025 at 16:56

Maybe a couple of months and we will be riding along there Mick.

Come on now Cyril , be reasonable .
One can’t be seen on Ben Nevis , the highest mountain in the land , with creases in one’s slacks can one ? …
I mean … one does have standards to maintain after all .

Comment by: Chris on 23rd February 2025 at 18:01

Cyril, the litter only begins at Martland Mill and then proceeds through Wigan until the top lock after that, it gets litter-free again.

Comment by: Alan on 23rd February 2025 at 18:42

There were two crashes on the bridge at different times, one was a Bedford Yougers Tartan beer lorry, the other a Creda lorry.

Good photo Dennis , I never realised how intricate the plaster relief design on the ceiling of the Sally Army building actually was until now … thanks for posting .

I write this merely on the off chance that Dennis may post a photo of the aforesaid next week … as waiting for a post to appear on this pots for rags site is tantamount to waiting for an appointment at the quack’s …

Dizziness and blackouts you say Mr. Oz ?

Nausea and abdominal pain ?

Loss of vision and bleeding from the rectum ?

Let’s see , … I think we may have a slot available a week Thursday .

Guess that qualifies me for a lifetime ban on here then eh ?

Comment by: Dennis on 23rd February 2025 at 20:59

Funny you should mention that plaster relief Ozy……
