The Slaying of Wat 'Walter' Tyler

The Slaying of Wat 'Walter' Tyler
This beautiful stained glass window in the Standish Chapel of St Wilfrid's Church was installed in the 20th Century to commemorate the slaying of Wat Tyler leader of 'The Peasants Revolt' by Squire Ralph Standish in 1381 after he drew his sword in the the presence of the King. They didn't mess around in those days!
He was rewarded for saving the life of King Richard II with the gift of Scarborough Castle.

Scarborough Castle is worth a visit, opens Sat and Sun from 10am.
The views are spectacular.

Comment by: Robert on 28th January 2025 at 09:14

I'll 2nd that, Scarborough castle on the North Yorkshire Coast, a great place to visit if your up there on Holiday, or even around Whitby, you'll not be disappointed.

Comment by: Poet on 28th January 2025 at 09:20

Nice picture of a grand window .
Presumably Mariah Hutton was the rector's wife. .
They say he haunts The Owls .

Comment by: Ann on 28th January 2025 at 09:24

If you like glorious panoramic views Scarborough Castle is the place to be.
Situated high up on the Mountains, the Castle is a great building to see, but the views over the arbour and sea is spectacular, a must see.
Scarborough it's itself is a beautiful place.

Comment by: Arthur on 28th January 2025 at 09:31

Beautiful coloured Glass windows and craftmanship.

Comment by: Alan on 28th January 2025 at 09:36

If your like Castles, Scarborough is the place to see, if your visiting Yorkshire.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th January 2025 at 09:37

With being in church, It's a case of "Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar" as sung by Gracie Fields, (only a little joke, Colin; it's really beautiful.). I love stained glass windows when the sun shines through from outside and you can see all the detail and the glorious colours. I have seen Scarborough Castle in the distance from the esplanade many times, but never actually been up to it.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th January 2025 at 10:43

Not much changes regarding the working class with overpaying taxes to the magnates in charge. A beautiful stained glass window even if it depicts the slaying of a man standing up for the ‘rights’ of the peasants and in a church especially. Plus the King was only 14 yrs of age and he wasn’t even in charge really. No ‘wokes’ in those days.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th January 2025 at 11:21

Well said, Wigan Worlders! People can keep Benidorm and Tenerife, and I would HATE to go on a cruise where you have to get dolled up to have your tea and call it your dinner....no thanks! Give me some fish and chips at Whitby or Scarborough anytime. I'm a proud Lancastrian but I admit I love the Yorkshire coast, and it's nice to hear people singing its praises. Sorry for going off the subject, Colin, but I think you know by now how a photo-a-day picture triggers off all kinds of non-related comments!

Welcome to Wiganthorpe Planet, sponsored by the Co-op 3-4 Market Place.

Whilst visiting Scarborough Castle Wiganthorpe Hall is also worthy of a visit.

Irene, nobody digresses or flies off a tangent more than myself and your 'Walter, Walter' comment made me chuckle, you were quick off the mark with that one!
All the comments with regard to Scarborough made me recall one of my first visits to the town in the early 1970's when I was with The Rank Organisation. Alan Ayckbourn was establishing his new theatre at which he premiered his plays before they opened in The West End. I was advising on the new seating layout and design for which we had the contract. He was a delightful man and easy to speak with.
He is very much alive at 85 and still lives in Scarborough, I must put Scarborough on my bucket list to visit again this summer, walk along that lovely sea front, visit the castle and go to the theatre. And who knows, knock on Alan's door to see if he remembers me!!!!!!!
Oh by the way it is a lovely window of which there are many in St Wilfrid's.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th January 2025 at 12:56

Alan at 09:36.
Your surname wouldn’t happen to Ayckbourn would it???????? :-)

Comment by: Hilda on 28th January 2025 at 13:10

Have you beeeeeen Walter?

Comment by: Garry on 28th January 2025 at 13:27

Irene you are absolutely spot on.
If the weather can be good, Cornwall, Devon and Yorkshire brilliant holiday destination. That comment deserves a sherry, cheers Irene.

Comment by: Big Harold on 28th January 2025 at 13:39

Irene, I'm with you. I also don't like cruise ship holidays, but many do, including many, many Wiganers whose previous holidays would have been Billy Butlins.
And you remember this a lot of ladies don't take much dolling up to look nice.

Comment by: UN on 28th January 2025 at 14:02

Walter is desperately in need of a Human Rights Lawyer.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 28th January 2025 at 14:49

Odd isn’t it Veronica how the church often takes the side of the rich and powerful , whilst at the same time attempting to convince the lowly masses that it’s actually the meek and the poor who are ultimately set to inherit the earth ?
Why not just say … as long as we’re alive , it all belongs to us … but as soon as we’re all dead … you can have it …it’s all yours .

A similar thing occurred during the Spanish civil war when the Catholic Church sided with Franco’s nationalists against the republicans .

I daresay this kind of attitude by the church crops up constantly … all over the world .
Sort of betting on the winning team if I can put it that way .

I don’t know about yourself , but personally I find it all a little bit confusing .

Comment by: Mark on 28th January 2025 at 14:50

People only go abroad for the weather and cheap food.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th January 2025 at 14:56

Those Cruise Ships look wonderful and well equipped but I can’t believe how tall they are and manage not to topple over. Too much of an easy target for terrorists in my opinion.
Some people love them but not me, I wouldn’t want to be confined to block of flats with thousands of other people for two weeks no matter how luxurious.

Comment by: Alan on 28th January 2025 at 15:25

Irene...I'm with you. Our British Coast have a lot to offer, and yes Whitby fish and Chips the best. One portion is enough for two. Pour me a glass of Sherry too Garry.

Comment by: Alan on 28th January 2025 at 15:31

NO Colin Traynor, I'm not Alan Ayckbourn, he's 85 years old......

Comment by: Tom Cruise on 28th January 2025 at 15:40

Colin, Cruise ships don't topple over because there so much ship underneath the water that you see on top.
Like Irene says, gimi fish and chips anytime and Scarborough.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th January 2025 at 16:05

Yes the humble people all suffered under the Church and the State Ozy . Even the Popes’ had their armies not forgetting the Inquisitions. I’m under no illusions of the cruelties by church or state. This is what happens watching ‘Wolf Hall’..it does get you interested in what went on in those time.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th January 2025 at 16:07

Peter Parrott, when I saw your comment, I thought it was a joke but is indeed a place near Malton.
North and East Yorkshire are beautiful we both love it. My wife would have us move there tomorrow given a chance.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th January 2025 at 16:30

.Ozy, you raise a good point.
I am not sure which is the nearest church to Orgreave in South Yorkshire but I could imagine a stained glass window and a similar scene with Arthur Scargill on the floor fending off a police officer with a batten.
I might send this photo to the local council, you never know what an idea it might give them!

Comment by: . Ozy . on 28th January 2025 at 16:31

I don’t go abroad for the weather and cheap food Mark .
Well yes ! The weather is normally much better than what we have to put up with here , I’ll hold my hands up there ; but it isn’t just the weather is it ?

We don’t have a leaning tower of Wiggin do we ?
To give just one ridiculous example . So if you want to see a proper one , you’ll have to go to Pisa .

But there are a million other good reasons to get away from plague island for a spell although I’m not prepared to attempt to list them here .

It’s been a while now since I’ve ventured from these shores , as Brexit has put the mockers on long term European travel to a degree , but when I have been abroad , it was never on a luxury liner , it was on a cross channel ferry with my battered old van , or occasionally on an old Honda 90 .
And the cheap food that I consumed was purchased in foreign supermarkets and prepared by myself either within the confines of the aforementioned vehicle , or alternatively by the roadside weather permitting , which was usually always .
And I’m here to tell you that my experiences were all the better for that .

Comment by: Paul S. on 28th January 2025 at 17:07

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Definitely.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th January 2025 at 17:30

Colin, just to give you another giggle, the last line of Gracie's song is
:"Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar......and I'll show you where I'm tattooed"! Always makes me smile, does that!

Comment by: Toffee Rock on 28th January 2025 at 18:41

Irene do you still wear Clogs?
Give me Blackpool any day, and of course fish and chips.

Comment by: Rob on 28th January 2025 at 18:51

We used to have a leaning Church Steeple in Scoows. But I don't go abroad nether like most Wigan Worlders. I wouldn't like their food or water, don't trust the hotels or apartments insects and fleas in the bedrooms.....I'll not continue.
St Ives for me is the best and safe.

Comment by: John Noakes on 28th January 2025 at 19:50

Tom Cruise, you are so wrong in what you say about a ship and it's hull. Just stick to acting.

Comment by: Wigan Mick in Space on 28th January 2025 at 20:03

Mark, the food abroad is anything but cheap. It's much higher quality than here too.

Comment by: Robert on 28th January 2025 at 20:46

If anyone is going to Scarborough Castle, have a trip to Pickering too and visit Mathewsons vintage vehicles as on TV Bangers and Cash, you won't be disappointed and the Yorkshire country side is beautiful.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th January 2025 at 22:40

I just love going off and trying new places there’s so many lovely places - too many to mention. We are only here once and i’ll try anything I’m just thankful I can. I love anywhere in Italy and the Dordogne and seeing the Lavender fields in Provence and our own little island of Jersey . What’s not to like? It’s nice to get back home no matter how far I roam. Concrete jungles in Spain or any of the other hot spots are off limits for me- apart from the beautiful Greek Islands. Up North here with the dramatic landscape is nicer than down south in my opinion. Only been on one 3 day cruise from Cyprus to Haifa and was sick as a dog.

Comment by: Robert on 29th January 2025 at 06:05

Where ever you go on holiday abroad no holiday resort can match Cornwall and Yorkshire for beauty. It's just the weather most people go abroad for..Britain have some beautiful places to see and explore. You can trust the food and tap water and most importantly feel safe.

Comment by: Kath on 29th January 2025 at 06:25

The TV programe holidays from hell abroad have made my mind up.
Ships, hotels apartments all poor conditions. Some holiday makers were crying at their ruined and disgusting places they've stayed and saved up for.
You feel for them.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th January 2025 at 08:51

Of course there’s beautiful places here at home but you haven’t lived if you haven’t seen the mountains ranges of Switzerland, Italy and Austria. You can visit this country anytime.
Get the suitcases out and go off and see other sights .. next year I’m off to ‘see Naples before I die’…that’s when my passport runs out….
I want to ‘investigate’ Pompeii… .
Wherever you go enjoy and stay safe.

Comment by: Kath on 29th January 2025 at 09:55

Veronica I've seen them all on tv, that enough for me and still not for me!
There'll never be delays at airports for me. Have a nice time.

Comment by: Rob on 29th January 2025 at 10:25

You can also go to Switzerland, Italy and Austria anytime but I much prefer Yorkshire and Fish&Chips anytime.
We have so much beauty in our Country and like to our our economy.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th January 2025 at 10:55

Each to his/her own… nothing ventured nothing gained….don't forget your macs. ;o))

Comment by: Wigan mon on 29th January 2025 at 12:14

I love fishing in Yorkshire especially when its raining, then fish cod and chips for tay, tha cornt beat it.

Comment by: Jeff on 29th January 2025 at 12:50

There is delays on our roads too you know whilst going on holiday, but that's just a delay.
The big problem with going on hols abroad is flight cancellations to and from A to B. I don't fancy sleeping on airport floors.
I'll stick to holidays in Britain...Devon is my favourite place, been there and Cornwall for many years and love it.
But I can understand that the weather can play an important factor.
And yes Scarborough is a lovely clean place to visit.

Comment by: Arthur on 29th January 2025 at 12:54

That's exactly right Veronica.
Each to everyone's own.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th January 2025 at 14:17

I went to St Mawes last year it was great but coming back on the motorway was dreadful…so holdups everywhere. I’ve never been held up yet at the airport perhaps because I don’t go on hotspot beach holidays. I love the culture in many places the only places I would not go again is Turkey or Bulgaria I went many years ago. Been there once to each place. But never again.
